Specialty Does Anyone Constantly Find Opened Cosmetics At Your Store?

Note: I am talking about Basic Target Beauty, not Ulta where there are Testers for the Guests to try! Also, the stuff I damage out NO ONE would buy. I have also been told to damage out stuff that has a broken seal if it’s supposed to have one.

It seems like every shift I am finding opened lipgloss, foundation that has been pumped, etc. and it is non-stop!

I am wondering if anyone else has had this experience?

I am doing damages everyday (I try not to leave anything for the next person) and I feel bad that all that makeup that would be perfectly good has to be thrown away because someone was selfish enough to, “Sample,” (i.e. Basically Steal IMO) things.

Like why would you think it’s okay to break open a lip gloss, and leave it on the display mangled and gross looking so that no one ever buys it? Like WTF?!

Ugh, IDK, people are something else.

Yep. Multiple times daily, all over the store. Something about lipstick and pigs comes to mind.

Odd you should mention that! Early last evening I was at the local T, picking up a prescription then wandered the aisles. Looking at the bread aisle I saw two packages of cosmetic shit (a square package with 6 little compartments of what looked like dry paint). This was shoved behind the hot dog rolls. People are pigs.

Yep, all the time. There have even been nasty messages written with foundation or lipstick; made sure our AP TM saw one of them that I found. Lots of nail polish dabs. It really does get pretty disgusting sometimes.

In my area (OTC and Pers Care), I find wrecked boxes that electric toothbrushes came in - like anyone wants to use a toothbrush that someone else has handled? Yuk. A box of protein bars ripped into and one bar taken, the rest of the box left on the shelf. Ripped open packages of maxi pads. The worst to clean up is shaving cream sprayed around. The grossest is half-eaten food or frozen food that's been sitting all night so it thawed and leaked.

People complain about prices being high but all that merch defected out is part of why. Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with people who do stuff like that.

If I had the ability to send Guest’s like that to jail they would have to build like 20 new jails lol!

It takes up a fair amount of my time because I have to make sure I have time at the end to defect stuff out if I run into defects! I try to give myself around 20 - 30 mins at the end of the day to clean out my cart (defects, Beauty Stray, Backstocking Overstock, ect.)

I might be misinterpreting (I have Autism) but…

Do you mean me grabbing the Guest after photographing them destroying merchandise and/or stealing?

When I made the comment about what I would do if I was legally put in charge of who goes to jail, I was kinda joking, but I also I meant that I would be given the legal authority to do so. So I wouldn’t need to grab them or anything, the cops would do that when they become aware of someone who needs jail.

I do view, “sampling,” products that are meant to be bought as basically stealing, because we can’t sell the product after it’s been sampled. We have to defect it out so we still lose money, and it takes up TM’s time as well. I couldn’t care less that you didn’t physically take it out of the store tbh.

I do honestly think either we should be allowed to directly ask tell the guests to not sample/open products or AP should do something when they see it.

Basically the way I see it as it stands now if you say something and the Guest gets angry they could complain and that could cause issues for you. Basically IF I say anything I am very nice and I say that we askthat you not open products for any reason before buying them and I tell them they can even return and open and used beauty product if they decide they don’t like it for any reason. My issue obviously is that it should not be that we ask, it should be that you are not allowed to open products and destroy merchandise, and then leave it on the shelf for someone to clean up.
