Just wondering, I know they call sometimes when they need backup usually when a lot of people call in.

No. Though it may make you get a smaller raise or less likely to promote than someone who does answer calls and come in. It may also be a reason for them to not keep you if you are seasonal.

Not unless you're salaried.

But it is considered polite to answer or call back when possible to let them know you have plans.

Just answer the phone and say no.. You're not obligated to work when you're not scheduled so you shouldn't feel bad if you don't want to work on your day off. Giving an answer, instead of ignoring it, allows HR to move onto the next person quicker without having to wait for a responses from a couple people.

I wasn't officially sanctioned but my tl wanted an explanation. I simply don't carry my phone everywhere and may go several hours without checking it. 😱

You don't have to answer their calls or return their c alls. They are calling you to ASK you to come in...meaning you have the option to say no and or not even answer or return their call. I have never ( in over 19 years) returned a call from Spot unless I wanted to go in etc. I also very rarely will a answer a call from them. I will let them leave a message then decide if I want to return the call or not . I don't think its rude not to answer...they are calling me on my time off.

Yeh...no.
Unless the job provides a cell phone & requires you to keep it on you at all times, you don't even owe them an explanation but you'd better be iron-clad when taking down your schedule.
It's good to keep your phone on you if you want hours & it's a courtesy to pick up/return their calls but it's not required.
Off-time is just that.

I was on vacation in Oct. for a week and a half (..hundreds of miles from my store) the second day of my trip I get a call from Spot they leave a message wanting to know if I wanted to come in the next day to help backstock cause we had a big visit coming up. Did I call them back? hell no. A ringing phone is a request not a demand

You wont get in trouble! Spot is calling you on YOUR time! I remember when the two other people who did Cash office with me were not able to come in (one on vacation and the other had a family emergency) well I had requested off months in advance because of a Holiday. Spot tried calling me to get me voluntarily give up the time off.... oh Hell no... its Spot's responsibility to schedule and fill the slots to work not yours.

Only time I was ever called on my day off was when I was on vacation and had just stepped outside the airport at my destination.
