I was wondering how clearance works? I'm going to be starting soon, just waiting for orientation, but is there some where clearance goes before heading to the floor, like employees get first dibs? When ever I go to target I always go to the end of the isles and check but never really seems like great stuff, is that cause you guys got it already? Also who comes up with what's going to be on clearance and the price?
Thanks I'm sure I'll figure it all out as I go but after reading all the posts on here you guys and gals are super helpful so just thought I'd ask.
Thanks again

Eh, no.
Having worked on price team, I was told that if I saw a great deal it had to be on the floor for a token amt of time to allow guests first shot.
We had a pricing TM termed for stashing stuff in her cart that she'd planned to buy & had taken an additional markdown on.

At our store it has to be out for 15 minutes. If you are training for price change team, you can ask your trainer which areas get marked on which days. WHAT gets marked down is pre-determined by corporate.

Nope! They got to go to the floor first, generally speaking. Plenty of people get fired for trying to hoard clearance items for later. In my store, the only time it's not a big deal is if there is lots of that product.

Like plastics.. BTC bins, of all sizes. Leadership helped me load the stuff out the back door, cause I took so much for a garage project. But you better clear that in advance.

In general you leave it alone until your breaks or lunch.

On your MyDevice, go to my work and sign in. After that, click the little head looking thing on the top left. In there will be your list for price change. Scan those items first. After the list is done, you'll open scan whatever areas you're working in that day. Open scan is basically scanning every item. Some items will go salvage and you will put those in your cart and box them up at the end of your shift and I believe give them to receiving. You may also have tubs in the backroom that need to be marked down as well. Also, you will use a portable printer to print all your tickets. That's the basics.

All items, not just clearance, have to be on the floor for a certain amount of time to allow the guest to buy it. This mostly goes for high demand items like street dated product or limited quantities.

Guests get first dibs. Not employees.

At our store all merchandise has to be out on the sales for 1 or 2 hours I think before we can buy it.

Stupid rule. Just because we work there we are excluded from good clearance deals? Sorry not happening at my store lol.

One additional note: at my store if you are off for the day (or at least the opening shift) you can buy the item once the store opens.

We just bring it up to GS and have them hold it for us. Even the executives do it. But we wait until it's on the floor for a while, which usually isn't an issue, because most clearance stuff goes out fairly early, so by the time you have a break to grab it, it's been out for a while.

Back when they took steep markdowns on online returns, we had a lady who was notorious for returning items then coming back later to snag them from the floor after they'd been marked down.
One of our GSTMs saw the pattern & notified AP.
Thereafter when she 'returned' something, the ETL would hold it in the back for a few days.
If a TM was interested, they got it.
I think that was part of the reason the markdowns aren't as good any more.

I remember our last beer reset. I am generally a very honorable person, but having been a PA for the last two years I felt I deserved being able to turn a Labatt 18 pack, with the clearance label facing out so you couldnt see it. We had 5, and I made sure to let the rest of the people I like at the store know we had them (after I bought mine).

it was $7.86 or something rediculous.

Pretty sure at my store it needs to be out on the sales floor for 15 minutes while the store is open. Team members may then purchase items on breaks, lunches, or while otherwise off the clock.

No stashing, no buying out of the back room.

When I worked at the grocery store they always told the employees about the markdowns first.
My family ate top of the line steak because I always grabbed the stuff right after I marked it down.
The stores attitude was that it was selling it, the employees were customers too, and it increased moral, so why not?

exactly! all my co-works think I am a kill joy, There was something I wanted and a person returned it and the GS person said "thetargetman" heres that Darth Vader helmet you wanted!" she was all set to put it aside for me and I said "nope... has to go out on the floor first!"

Omg I missed that. I used to work in a Meat Department, and got to hand pick all my steak, first dibs. Sometimes we'd grind our own meat for us with bacon and seasoning mixed into the batch. Made doing laundry everyday worth it.
