So I'm working in a store which has guest service as part of the cashiering and not its own separate place. Because of this, I've had to do returns which has been fine so far. But today, a woman came in and wanted to return two items but she had a receipt for it as well so I just scanned it and it worked. She was returning a laptop and a case which we don't carry (she was returning them from a different store) and I always do the recommend return that the register gave and this time, it recommended cash. So I gave away ~$350 in cash. It felt kind of weird and after she left, I've been feeling a little guilty. Do you think that this could've been a scam?

I think when we get an electronics return like that, the Electronics team member has to look at it first to make sure all the pieces are there/it's not wrecked.

One of the Target Mobile people came up and took the laptop while mentioning that this was the second one that came in today. Basically, I think it (the return) was okay but looking back, I probably should've given a gift card return.

Was the receipt from the same day? Our store has had people hitting us up for returns on expensive items like breast pumps and iPads that they bought at another store with cash/Target Gift Cards and we get recommended to refund them entirely in cash. We've been advised to go the Gift Card route for that unless the guest makes a huge stink about it, then we just hand it over for LOD/AP to figure out.

If your AP wants to dig deep enough they can probably find out what the person is doing. There is always a paper trail so to speak.

Or it could be completely legitimate.

People who do the pay partial cash, partial gift card and get back full cash game usually do no receipt return with a gift card lookup. If they had the actual receipt I would question what other items were on it that weren't being returned. Items like visa or amex prepaid cards.

If the laptop was open I would have offered a gift card refund.
