Okay, so tomorrow night i am scheduled under GSTL/GSA. I've covered breaks and lunches before and I've worked the shift from 8-4;30 a couple times, but I've never closed. No ones gone over with me how to close the registers down, and that whole process. Can someone tell me what the closing routines are for GSTL/GSA please!? how do you close registers down, what do you guys fill, etc.

Check out the GSTL/GSA guide in our Guides section. It should have info on the closing routines.

Do you have supervisor level POS access? Going to assume that you do otherwise you'll need to basically have the LOD do anything pertaining to closing registers, alcohol overrides for minors, etc.

Things the closing GSTL/GSA is responsible for at my store, in no particular order:

1) Restroom checks done & manager check at 5 PM signed off by GSA/GSTL
2) Go-backs cleared from lanes and hangers dumped in the back room
3) All carts inside at the end of the night, including all the reserves if the next day is a truck day
4) Fill bags/register tape/coupon paper as needed
5) Make sure the GSTM has brought all the CRC/Salvage/Toss/ESIM to the proper sort areas in the back. Sign off on the CRC audit before that's done (check to make sure the whole list is present and accounted for before it's boxed up, and sign/initial the list)
6) Dust the hiring kiosk, photo kiosk, ATM
7) Stock and zone the coolers, card wall, and end caps

Closing registers (assumes you have supervisor #s):

Go to any open register and log in. Hit K4 (GSTL), K8, K1 to auto-close all unused registers (doesn't always work at my store X_X) and print the closing checklist, usually done anytime during the 8 PM - 9PM block (store closes at 10). The number towards the top that says how many start bundles you'll need (I forget the exact wording) you need to communicate to the LOD around 8:45-9 PM, and they'll either retrieve them for you or have you go into the CO with them to get them. You'll need those bundles, the closing register bags, some sort of coupon bag (varies by store) and at least at mine we use a tray for checks. You'll also need a yellow audit envelope filled out with your store # and today's date, this may already be out by wherever you keep your change fund.

Wheel the beast out to the change fund and retrieve your change fund bag if your closing cashier(s) are good and set on change, as well as the rolled coin trays. To close a register, you hit K5 before logging in, then put in your #s. Take out the paper money inside, making sure to sort by denomination (2s go with the hundreds/50s) and place in the bag along with any $1 coins or $0.50 coins. Be sure to check under the till inside the register drawer as well. For checks, put in your check tray or whatever your store uses, coupons in the coupon bag (if you notice any gift cards or pharmacy rewards mixed in you can trash those), Sales Audit slips (paper signatures) or post voids in the yellow audit envelope. Use 1 starting bundle to replenish the register for the next day (I like to place it at the top of the keyboard before opening the drawer so that I never forget to fund it), broken apart by denomination. Guest Service, Pharmacy (if they don't close theirs) registers should have their closing bags near their registers, and are banked in the morning, so don't use a bundle on those, just on checklane registers, sbux/food ave, electronics boat, etc.

Leave an appropriate number of checklanes open to close with (varies by store) and at least 1 GS register open until after close (some higher risk or volume stores will not have you close until after the store closes so you can ignore that if need be). After all lanes are closed, inform the LOD, you'll meet them at the CO and go inside where they'll check that all the bags are there and then place them in the safe. Usually this is when I'll get the last few carts, take back hangers, etc. and you're done!

Every store will vary but that's the gist of it. Hope it helps somewhat, I know it's a fair amount of info.

One note on closing registers: If you're in an overnight store, make sure you leave one register open for the overnight team.
