I just found out they're supposed to build a new Target 5 minutes from my home. I'm the receiver now at my store (15 minutes away) that I've been at for 20 years (from when it first opened).
Do you think I should stay at my current store which is very likely to suffer a significant drop in traffic, or go to the new store, where the store and team is untested and will have "new store" challenges?
Current job satisfaction level: 75% positive

Advice and experiences please.

I can't give you an answer but I will give you a story that similarly happened to my store. Around 2003, Target decided to open up a shopping mall store about seven minutes/ two miles away from my store. It did put a dent in the traffic but it wasn't too bad.

In fact, the loss of sales really didn't hurt the store too much in the long run and actually rebound a little bit later on.

The receiver at the time did go to the new store (I believe he said it was easier for him but I could be wrong).

There was speculation that my store would close, despite being a cash cow.

One TL said it would close because it was last in the district which didn't make sense.

However, both stores have coexisted for over 20 years.

Do you know who will be leadership at the new store? A few years ago, a new store opened in my area and I talked to HR about transferring. Then I found out that the TL I wanted to get away from was going to be a TL at the new store. Yikes. I rescinded my request.

If I was 75% happy where I was, I would plan to stay there, but the final decision would depend on who the leaders would be at both stores. Good leaders are priceless and for me would be worth following, or escaping, as the case may be. While it would be exciting to open a new store, Target is a challenging place to work these days, and I think I’d just stay with the devil I knew, unless there was a very compelling reason to transfer. Incidentally, and ASANTS, I have never known anyone who transferred at Spot who was happy or felt totally accepted at their new store, but that wouldn’t necessarily apply to opening a new store, since everyone would be starting together. Good luck, whatever you choose, I hope it works out well for you.🍀
