Class is in session

As you heard from Chief Human Resources Officer Melissa Kremer earlier this morning, Target is offering debt-free education assistance for all U.S.-based full- and part-time team members (that includes team members at stores, distribution centers and headquarters locations), starting this fall. It’s an industry-leading new program, designed to remove the barrier of the high cost of education and continue to invest in our team members' career growth. Here are the highlights:
  • Who can participate: All U.S.-based full-time and part-time team members, starting on their first day of work at Target
  • How many different programs are available: An industry-leading 250 business-aligned programs from business management and operations to IT, computer science, design and more at 40+ schools, colleges and universities (including historically Black colleges and universities and Hispanic-serving institutions)
  • How much is covered: There are no out-of-pocket costs for business-aligned programs at in-network schools
Undergraduate and associate degrees, certificates, bootcamp programs, high school completion classes and even coverage for textbooks and course fees — it's all part of Target’s $200 million investment over the next four years. And for team members continuing their education in a master’s program in the network of schools, the Bullseye will make direct payments of up to $10,000 annually to their school to reduce the burden of up-front, costly tuition payments. (Head to targetpayandbenefits.com for all the details.)

It’s part of Target Forward, our new sustainability strategy …
… which is focused on the intersection of people and planet and includes goals to create an equitable and inclusive workforce. Through this investment, Target is taking steps to eliminate student debt and promote equitable access for all team members.

And it’s one more way Target’s continuing to show up for the team ...
… including industry-leading $15 starting wages, recognition bonuses, coronavirus benefits and more. It’s a great time to be on Team Target.

@slowhands No they're trying to attract new employees (and develop skills within them) with this, not keep the ones they have. The bonuses are going toward retention. Still cheaper than giving everyone health insurance.

I see posts all the time asking why the new generation is so cynical and why they think socialism would be a better system.
Ladies and gentleman, exhibit A.

I know Target offered some level of benefit before. Does anyone know what it was? Is this just extending the existing benefit that full time workers had access to part time workers or is this an increase for everyone?

This part in particular seems nice. Unless you flunk and have to pay it back.

Team Leaders and above were the only ones eligible. This is a completely new and different program, but they are also keeping the other program for those who are already enrolled in a school that is not part of this new plan. The old plan has a cap on tuition paid as well. The new plan is open to team members on the first day of employment apart from Seasonals, On-Demand, and Interns. This applies to Stores, HQ, and DCs.

It’s nice, Now they need to do something about allowing more hours for full time employees and also fix the job description for CA’s.

Just hope leadership allows TMs the availability to take said courses.
Paid tuition doesn't help if you're constantly scheduled during classes.
Granted i am at the DC so it might be different, and since it is an entirely new program it might be different, but it is my understanding that if you can prove that a class has no other availability, you will not have to work during that time period so you can take the class.

It is a small distinction but the previous program was available to all full time team members, not just team leads.
Everyone at the DCs and corporate already had access to the prior program.
It is good to know that it is still an improvement for us too.

Correct, it was any 100% FTE before. I'm kind of excited about this, because I already have a Bachelor's, but only ETLs and above were eligible for the graduate-level degree reimbursement before.

I'd really rather not be called about it. I certainly don't want to talk to an expert on the phone. I don't talk on the phone unless I'm making appointments.

I just wish I could do all this online without needing to get phone calls. I want a list of options BEFORE signing up to be notified. I want to be able to peruse them at my own leisure.

They're trying to lure low income fresh out of high school kids. And by the time you're hired, they'll keep giving you 35+ hours a week, leaving you with no time/energy for classes, and to do your homework. you also worry about your performance at work and get scared each week cuz you could be let go anytime leaving you to pay your tuition or leave school when they no longer support your education.

Damn, I’ve been trying to finish off school for years but scheduling with Target always got in the way… I might actually have a chance at finishing. Wow.

What's with all of the naysaying? Anyone who knows my general post history will know I'm not some Target apologist, but this is literally free money to better yourself. This is the best type of incentive an employer can offer - a path for employees to better themselves without taking a hit financially.

If you hate working for Target so much, educate yourself and go get a job you want? I'm sure there are timing requirements like with most education reimbursement programs but jfc people, how is this anything but a positive?

I think this is wonderful. A lot of the younger kids at my store have been working for their families and upset they won't ever be able to afford college or have the time to go. If they can do a few classes a year online while they're working and get it PAID for?! They're going to be so thrilled with this.

I know it's not ideal for everyone, but this will change lives for the better.
