Why are my hours being cut?

I'm a 17 year old high school student and I've been working at Target for almost two years and I've never seen a cut in my hours like I've been seeing recently. Typically I get 16-20 hours a week and during the holidays I would get 22.5 (the legal limit for a minor) and nearly 35-40 when I was on summer or Christmas vacation. During the January to April time (at least last year) my hours were dropped to 10-14 a week but now I'm getting 3-7 hours a week, it's mostly just one shift a week. I would call myself a good employee and I vary rarely call out. I'm just wondering if there's a reason or if this is what they do when they are about to fire someone?

Kinda hard considering I'm high school student so any shift I can work unless it's weekends has to start at 2:30, if not 3
At my store, these are the shifts that are most often called off by scheduled TMs. Talk to your TL and see if your store has a call list for TMs willing to come in at short notice.
Also, if you haven't already, ask your TL about cross-training. TMs who know how to do more things can be scheduled for more shifts.

1. Bleak sales and hours for this quarter
2. Probably a little bit due to various customer protests
3. Tariff/stock market issues
4. Seniority for available payroll
1. Yes
2. lol, No
3. No, total store payroll had been allocated way before tariffs were announced and based on last years comps
4. No, lol, what?

My advice is to ask to learn presentation or price change, as those are where there is a higher number of hours available currently.

Pick up shifts if none are available-Tell your leader you will pick up shifts if someone calls out. Ask to be cross trained in other work centers . More than likely your leader is being told not to even replace call outs to save payroll. So you might have to suck up the small schedules for awhile

Just following the news of a nationally followed church pastor who asked his congregtion and followers to boycott from shopping at Target for 40days for their abandonment of DEI.

Lose of government worker employment is very much real and causing crazy market trends.

Back in the days of old, minors were given light hour schedules of 4-6 hours.

Forgot to mention high winter bills and income tax time period.

Damn, the small schedule might suck but at least I have a job. I work today so I'm probably gonna go ask one of my TL or my ETL.

@ThatCartGuy Get Crossed Trained for more than one Department. And by “Cross Training” I mean Actually Do the Training for Said Departments. It’ll 1) Help You to Get more Hours. 2) You’ll become somewhat of a Specialist and Thus have more of a “say” in your work/life balance. I’m an ODTM and have requested countless times for my hours to be at the (minimal). They (Target) stay throwing 40 hours my way (If I so choose) because I’m knowledgeable about Anything and Everything outside of HR/Administrative.

If sales are down they will cut payroll no matter what their budget is.

Yes, learn everything. I was given a lot of hours because I was flexible. I have had salesfloor, recovery, backroom, cashier, electronics, flow shifts because of it.
At my target they won't train you on most things unless your 18 or older so my flexibility is a little hard however, I'm trained on register, self-checkout, carts, guest service, drive-up and reshop.
