Hello!

I'm running into some computer issues with my job search.
I'm not very savvy about how to do things and I hope that someone here can help me or direct me to a web site that I can understand.
I have Firefox as my browser. I can also use windows explorer if I need to.

I have Microsoft Windows Starter 2010 and have Windows 7. When I'm at my email and I have an attachment and I try to open the attachment I get a pop-up box that tells me that I need to purchase Windows office 2013.

I'm hoping that I can get Windows Word so that I can open the attachments.
I have a few questions, some of which will be easy once I have a beginning answer and know what to do next.

My questions:
1) Is Windows Word the program that I need?
2) If Windows word is the right answer is it possible to purchase just this one part...Windows Word?
3) There are some free Windows downloads, but I'm not sure exactly what it is I'm needing to download.
4) I've seen a free download that is a PDF word converter file. Is this what I'm looking for?
5) Any ideas as to where I can find out the answers to these questions?

I need to figure this out so that I can read the attachments that I'm getting from companies who have seen my resume....because, if I can't open the files/attachments I can't respond to some of the inquiries about my resume.

I realize that TBR isn't a site for computer support....but I'm not sure what it is I need to do. I'd like to have at least some sort of an idea of what to do before I take my laptop to a computer store for help. So if anyone can provide some assistance I'd appreciate it.

Even if no one has an idea of what I need to do, I still want to say "Thank-you" for reading through my post.

what is the extension on the file that you are downloading? Like does it say "filename.exe" "filename.doc" "filename.docx" "filename.pdf" "filename.ppt"?? If it's a .doc or .docx (which I suspect), you'll need a word processor. Microsoft Word works, but you'd have to purchase it. You can probably do that on the microsoft website, and you can purchase it separately from the entire Office package I believe. You can also try downloading OpenOffice. It's essentially the same thing, but it's free.

It sounds like you have a trial version of Microsoft Office and that's what your computer wants to use to open the files.

1. Owning a copy of Office would be a good idea. If purchasing Office would not be feasible (and none of your friends can hook you up with a free copy), you can try using WordPad, which is part of Windows - it's essentially a very watered-down version of Word. Another option is Google Drive, which is a free online service rather than a program you have to install on your computer. OpenOffice was discontinued a couple years ago, so I'm not sure if you can still get it anywhere.
2. It is possible, but it's difficult to find as a standalone program and isn't particularly economical.
3. This isn't a question. 😀
4. No. That download allows you to convert Word documents to PDFs, which are permanent and cannot be edited. PDFs are generally used for official documents which are not intended to be edited, such as flyers, manuals, and tax forms.
5. Well, I gave it a shot. Some of the techies here can probably be of greater assistance than myself. Also, when in doubt, Google it!

If you want a free alternative I've known this for years and I use it over MS word and it does what MS words does. Considering how ridiculously priced MS suite is

OpenOffice is still going strong and will read what you need to read be it .DOC or .DOCX etc 🙂

"Apache OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages."

OK Team....

Thanks for your help.....I've just read through all of your replies and haven't had a chance to look into any of them. Hopefully sometime today I'll get a chance to follow through.

I do know that going to the library is the best sure fire solution, but not always the best for my time & library time availability.

I'll get back with you to let you all know what has happened.

"Read you soon!"

OpenOffice is your best bet for everything. There is also LibreOffice. Google Docs. And save as pdf.

There a number of Firefox and Google Chrome free apps and extentions that will save webpages as pdf.

Google Docs is pretty awesome.
You can access it from anywhere and it works like magic with Chrome.

I forgot that Apache revived OpenOffice.

Uh oh.....I have done the download of OpenOffice and I still can't open the attachment. I did find that the extension is DOCX.

At the moment I went to my personal documents library and I found that I somehow managed to download or save the next version of my resume under the DOCX extension....and now I can't open my resume. I'm getting the same pop-up window to buy windows....and I don't understand why I can't back to my resume or why the Openoffice didn't work.

I'm pretty scared that I've lost the ability to get to my original resume. I think that I will take my laptop to a computer repair shop and see what they can do for me.

No, I don't mean Works. I meant Works *Suite*. It has word -- along with Streets and Trips, Money and other popular Microsoft programs, at least with 2002 edition.

Everyone....thanks for your advice and comments!
