So in California, any gift card under $10 can be redeemed in cash. However, the law of course says nothing about whether or not retailers can limit the amount of cards a consumer can cash out. It simply states that they can be cashed out in general. Yay for grey areas!

FAQs and Tips on Gift Certificates and Gift Cards: Legal Guide S-11 - California Department of Consumer Affairs
California Civil Code - CIV § 1749.5 | FindLaw

Tonight I had a guest come in, asking what the balance was on his gift cards, and if he could cash them out. (he had several, ranging from $9.99 to $7) I told him of course, but that I could only cash out ONE gift card. My store only allows one gift card cash out per guest, per day, and it must be done at Guest Service. We basically strictly enforce this to control the couponers and return frauders, and RARELY make exceptions.

ANYWAY....he asked me to repeat myself, even though I know he fucking heard me. I told him again, "We do one gift card, per guest, per day." Then he goes off about how ridiculous it was and that "It's been California Law since 2007, blah blah blah." I told him, "I know that's the law, that's why we can do ONE." And he just kept going on and on, and bringing up examples of stores that got fined for refusing to cash-out cards, cursing, and just being really threatening and hostile in general.

This is when I walk away and tell him a manager will be up in just a moment. I was done with this lardass, I wasn't going to be polite to him any longer. It's so satisfying to walk away when a cursing guest is in a middle of a rant. ANYWAY (again) Of course, my GSTL tells him exactly what I just told him, and he finally caves. He demands I return the merchandise he just bought, trying to suggest that it's somehow a huge loss for us. (it's not) and that we cash out his one gift card. I process everything, place all his shit on the counter, and tell him to have a wonderful day. /rant

NOW.....what's your opinion on this? Ignoring my pissed off ranting over this oafish scumbag leech of a guest, and looking at this from an objective point of view, do you think Target actually is right in regulating how many gift cards a guest can cash out? He kept bringing up that it was a law, but he doesn't really have much ground to stand on in my opinion. The law is super vague on this, and really only says that it's possible. As long as we do one, we're technically following the law, right?

I think Target is good with that policy. Like Retail Girl said, you'd have folks trying to cash out a ton of small gift cards. What would be the limit then, you know?

I love walking away from angry guests too. One thing I don't put up with is abuse. If I could get away with saying go fuck yourself before walking off, that would be even more satisfying. lol

My bosses tell me i can do a max of four per day per person. If we see a regular fraudster, ill let the bosses know.

The law does seem super vague. I would think Target would have the right to limit the number per day.
The law in Texas recently changed to allow cash back on gift cards, but our amount is $2.50. That seems a lot more reasonable than $10.

The law was put in place to reduce the amount of money retailers recieve from unredeemed gift cards every year. I agree it should be a smaller amount than $10. The law doesn't prohibit limiting the number of gift cards redeemable per day per customer, so I think you're ok to limit them to one.

I denied a purchase a few days ago with a guy who wanted to purchase 5 $10 Starbucks gift cards and when he went to pay, he handed me a Target gift card. At our store, they don't allow us to authorize a purchase of gift cards with another gift card, so I denied it and he through a fit, he asked to speak to a manager, told him I was the manager, and he walked away. He's done that before, his intentions were to cash out the Starbucks gift cards since they were each $10 and he had a $50 Target gift card, so essentially he was trying to cash out the $50 on the Target gift card.

Thats awesome but it has to be $9.99 or less to be cashed out.

I think your store only allowing one gift card cash out per guest, per day is definitely the right thing to do. Also I think you handled the situation perfectly.

And I just have to say, everything about this post is amazing, from the tags, to the poll, to the rant. Had me literally laughing out loud.

And I thought the Super Refund law in NY was bad.
I just looked it up and I think that's only a law in a particular county in New York State. I'm not going to post it because it'll give away your store location.

I work in a New York State store and I haven't heard of it.

Why a ten dollar limit? That's silly. Christmas time, I get a ton of gift cards at places I don't really care for. I should be able to cash them out. Gift cards are a way for companies to strong arm "customers" into giving them money.

It's a state law, but the process goes through the county government. Look for a "Waiver From Item Pricing" in or near your store entrance.

The coupon frauders would jizz in their pants over this

I need a few things from the grocery
Do things alone now mostly
Left me heart broken not lookin' for love
Surprised in my eyes when I looked above
The check out counter and I saw a face
My heart stood still so did time and space
Never felt that I could feel real again
But the look in her eyes said I need a friend
She turned to me thats when she said it
Looked me dead in the face, asked "Do you want to cash out your gift card ?"
And I

JIZZED IN MY PANTS
