That Happy Holidays thing was so fucking stupid. It happened at Sears as well.Bob Uhler was the best.
Back then Target was a place I was proud to work at: Take Charge of Education, many good local civic partners, good local philanthropy. After his forced retirement, we started dealing with controversy. Greg made a PAC contribution to a pro-business candidate who was also anti-gay so the first wave of angry guests came in & closed accounts, chopped up their red cards. Then Q4 rolled out "Happy holidays" & the righties came in lambasting poor TMs demanding to see their CHRISTMAS trees, cards, etc loudly deriding us before storming out. Meanwhile, Take Charge of Education & local philanthropy was quietly cut. Then Target stated support for trans folks which brought the nutcases storming thru stores with megaphones stating that Target supported pedophiles & allowed men into women's restrooms. Never mind that these folks never addressed pedophiles watching their boys using urinals in the men's rooms but Target finally installed 'family' restrooms in each store to quell the outrage. Shortly after were the riots following George Floyd's murder & then the Pride retreat so the DEI debacle is just the latest of Target's fumbling instead of doing the right thing.
I've come to terms with their cowardice & deal with stupid guests in my own subtle ways while drawing a paycheck.
To make clear, no one ever told us to stop saying Merry Christmas. Was it an official Target directive? For some reason people online thought it was some heathen conspiracy to denigrate Christians, but at Sears it was never even mentioned. Had a customer or two make a point of saying Merry Christmas, but that's it.
In my book, Happy Holidays encompasses the entire holiday season and includes everyone. But saying Merry Christmas is perfectly fine as well. Talk about a tempest in a teapot.
