yes Target will be caremad enough to get a lawyer who makes $200 an hour after you for stealing $50. It's like asking if Smaug would care if you snuck into his lair and snatched some gold from the pile he's sleeping on. This will only end with you getting shrekt.

Spot has lawyers on retainer who knock off scary letters in ten minutes.

Side story---
I was working for the Big Box Book Store in the days right before their bankruptcy and they had not been paying their bills.
One of the companies that wasn't getting paid was the company that did all our cleaning.
They weren't a mom and pop, they were a major corporation.
We got a phone call at the store asking for the bookkeeper and since I was the office manager it got routed to me.
It was a lawyer looking for payment on the cleaning bill.
A lawyer doing bill collecting.
Since I have had to deal with bill collectors way too many times in my life, I got a great deal of joy in asking the guy if this was what he has spent a fortune on going to law school in order to do.

Believe it or not, debt collections isn't a bad gig for a lawyer. Lots of money in it. The Fair Debt Collections Act doesn't apply to them so they can be extra obnoxious. Most of your regular debt collectors can't actually take you to court themselves. They can just annoy you, but eventually they'll have to sell that debt to someone who has a license to practice law in your state. I know a guy who does nothing but sue people for unpaid medical bills. Absolute evil. But, there's a lot of money in evil.

Prior AP here, you don’t steal CASH from the register and not get an encounter with the police or lawyers. If it hasnt happened yet, it probably will.

If your lucky, someone fucked up the case and you won’t get in any further trouble. That’s what it sounds like if all they did is fire you.

I know what it's like to go hungry (as an adult), but I'd never steal from the register. It's just not worth it in the end. You'll gain a little money in the short term and lose thousands more in the long run. Plus, it's not worth going to jail over. The most I've taken from Target is a odd candy bar when working overnight and no one can be bothered to open a self checkout lane. And even then, I'll just walk up to it the next day and scan the same one twice 😀

How dumb is "your friend" to think he could possibly get away with stealing from a cash register? Every company watches those things like a hawk. You are more likely to get away with stealing a 55 inch TV. (No, don't try that.)
I've seen a lot of Walmart associates taken out in handcuffs for that very reason. Not a lot of people seem to realize those domes above the registers are cameras 😂
