So I recently got rehired at Target. My orientation was today, so of course I got the handy dandy team member handbook which seems to have undergone approximately 0 changes since 2008. The thing is, the dress code only covers clothing. Are there any rules about personal appearance? I mean I keep myself neat and clean, I even redyed my hair to a natural color when I started job hunting (I'm going to miss being a phone monkey solely because no one cares what color your hair is) but I do have stretched ear piercings. They're not too extreme, the largest size I've ever worn is 7/16" and I'm at about a 0g right now because they got irritated from constantly wearing a headset and I needed to let them heal. My question is, will I get in trouble for them at Spot? I have plenty of solid plugs that look very much like normal earrings if you don't look at the back of my ears, but if someone were to see it'd be pretty noticeable. It's not explicitly banned in the handbook but we all know most of the rules aren't printed anywhere! :p

You should be fine so long as your gauged ears aren't going to get caught on anything.
What I've noticed is that basically everybody who is nervous about grooming standards never comes across any problems

I actually had a co-worker/friend that had about 18 piercings, worked at my spot for 4 or so years, until recently when she transferred. She also went through the entire rainbow, in terms of hair color. As for tattoos, I believe there's a couple people with a sleeve, most of the people here with tattoos are covered up just because of the placement of the tattoos, it may have been intentional but they tend to peak out.

Shoot, several of our TLs have full sleeve tats; one time our ETL-GE was bending over & I saw her tramp stamp; another ETL has a USMC on his wrist.
No one above TL has piercings but plenty of our TMs do from gauges to nose studs to hoops - you name it.

I have to admit I haven't been paying much attention to what the TMs at my store had when I was still just a guest. I suppose that's a point in my favor though lol... if I'm not paying attention it's not likely anyone else would. I think I'm still scarred from camp life.

Shaved every morning after shower, ironed pants, no wrinkles in my shirt, tucked in, dress shoes, belt. (Not to mention all other preparations some refuse to do, like brush their teeth and put on deodorant)

Did it since a TM, has worked well even into tl. Likely what easily earned me tl.

During my GSA days, a couple of women had just checked out & accosted me on their way out.
They were complaining about one of my cashiers.
Was she rude? Less than helpful? Not FFF? No.
She was sporting ear gauges, an eyebrow piercing & a nose ring.
The women asked if Target had a dress code.
I responded "Of course."
And?
"Red and Khaki!"

I always thought that anything applied at Target, really.. unless a Produce team member had multiple piercings, which she did. When Steritech came around, instead of telling her to remove them, the ETL told her to simply disappear. She was obviously well liked.

Target doesn't care about hair color at all. We had a cashier with blue hair for a while, and I had a couple big peekaboo highlights that were pink and purple.

At my store, anything goes with TMs and TLs. But one particularly "alternative" TM was not accepted for the internship.

As long as you aren't a walking safety hazard, basically anything goes. So it's up to you, but I would bear this in mind...

If you come to work looking like a schmuck, you're pegged as a schmuck.
If you come to work looking neat and tidy guests (and leaders) will have more respect for you.

The differences I noticed during my GSTL shifts wearing tucked in button-downs and dress shoes versus the days I threw on my target-volunteers shirt and sneakers were unbelievable. I don't think that's how it should be, but unfortunately that's how it goes.

One of my ETL's actually had bright blue streaks in her hair for a few months, and several of our leaders were covered in tattoo's

I personally dress down a bit.

Button down, rolled up sleeves, untucked, clean khakis (usually some of the Denizen stuff we had that went on clearance), belt, comfy but clean tennis shoes.

I shave, but always look a bit scruffy. I try to stay hygienic. No piercings or tattoos.

I think the fact that I wear button downs and tend to put on my commanding/fatherly persona while at work counter acts the scruffiness.

I'm typically one of the better dressed TLs, and generally miles ahead of the TMs.

Pretty much anything goes at my store too. Colored hair, multiple facial piercings.

One problem lately though: multiple TM's showing butt crack. Yup. Pretty tired of looking over and having 4-6 inches of ass crack smiling at me. For the love of God, pull your pants up, use a belt effectively or wear a shirt underneath that's tucked in!

Yeah, not that much ass crack at my store, but more than I'd like. I don't typically wear a belt, but y'know, I wear pants, that fit me. It's a novel idea. I wish some of our younger TM's picked up on it.

Our guests are equal-opportunity a$$holes.
They treat us like crap regardless how we dress.
Only diff being is the neatly-dressed guy you just insulted was the STL & he'll have your rude a$$ escorted out.

As long as you are clean and kept up, you should be OK. Honestly even if you aren't you're probably fine but it could come up in your review.

There are a number of things that bother me about Target, but I love how they allow us to express ourselves. I had long hair for a while and I never got any negative comments about it. I always had TLs, ETLs, regular TMs, AND guest tell me how nice it looked and how well I kept it. Not to mention the fact that I was able to wear oddly colored Chuckie T's. And in the winter time I was able to wear my casual shirts with my red hoodie.

I have been surprised at the variety of "looks" at our store amongst team members. It appears to be anything goes which is actually kinda cool. Different hair colors, any length of hair and beards for guys, piercings and tattoos just seem to be ok. One of the GSTLs even cut up her target shirt and made her own design out of it...which I thought was odd looking but it totally went with her jet black hair, purple bangs, very thin high arching penciled in eye brows and various tattoos. Rock on Target....

Team members with sleeve tattoos have to ensure the guest notices them by pushing their long sleeves up.

Probably one of the greatest things about Target - individuality. I've seen everything when it comes to appearance. Target does a good job at hiring people who express themselves visually (i.e. tattoos, hair, piercings, etc).

Ha. The HRTM who did my orientation made it sound like I was required to cover up my ink. I had been overheating half to death in long sleeves for a couple weeks before I saw a bunch of other TMs with visible tattoos and finally asked someone if there was an official policy- there's not, that HRTM was just ultra-conservative and liked to foist her views upon others. Cute!
