So we received a notice at the time-clock last night. A few things I find odd....

You are not allowed to change your availability while on the clock.
I find this rather alarming. As soon as you set foot in your store, for work, you should be paid.

You are not allowed to shop or purchase while on the clock.
I was born at night, but not last night. Sweet Baby J*****!!! No Shiz

There were a other topics. Trying to think a little more this morning! Stay tuned.

Changing your availability doesn't really count as work but I haven't seen anyone really make a big deal out of it since it generally only takes a couple of minutes.

You are not allowed to shop or purchase while on the clock.

So? That's always been the case. You don't get paid to shop. However, most stores will allow you to shop during your break.

Get paid as you step foot in the door? LOL.

You should be able to change availability while on the clock, it takes a whopping 2 minutes to do.

And you shouldn't shop while on the clock. You should be working, EARNING your paycheck.

I completely agree with shopping guidelines, but the availability changes! It's ridiculous.

Oh a few other things you shouldn't be doing on the clock.....

  • Writing/Checking your schedule.
  • Grabbing food for lunch- I don't necessarily agree with this. When you're stopped by a guest while punched-out asking for assistance. It cuts into your break. I doubt everyone brings a different shirt in for lunch breaks.
  • Grabbing items from your locker.

"grabbing food for lunch" is shopping. When you're asked for help off the clock, politely tell the guest "I'm sorry I'm not punched in right now so I'm not allowed to help you."

Right, but I don't think every situation it will be that easy.
I've used a similar statement a few times and Guest scoff like I need to drop what I'm doing to help them.

As a TM and during my lunch break, I used to take off my name tag and if a guest asked for assistance I politely said I didn't work there. As an ETL, my TMs would grab items to buy, leave it at the register, clock out, and then pay for it. It was on their way back to the break-room so I didn't care if they took a few extra moments to get food. Stalking or harassing TMs for a few minutes seems to be the opposite of FFF.

If I am off the clock, not getting paid, no matter what I am wearing, I am under no obligation to answer a guest's question. It's polite if I do. But if I keep walking, that's my choice.

Correct me if I am wrong, but is there anything in the handbook that says what you have to wear, or not wear, when you come to shop at Target? When I am off the clock shopping, I am a guest.

I vaguely remember from my training (2 years ago), that we're supposed to avoid red and khaki whilst shopping at Target, which is completely obvious, but some people really love their red and khaki...

Its your break so if you wanna grab something for lunch later you can do that. Saying earn your paycheck while you're a tm at target is ridiculous as long as you dont leave the store everything else should be acceptable.

Honestly why should you really care what people do while at work. They are responsible for themselves just as you are responsible for yourself so if they either shop or check their schedule or even use ehr on their break that is not ANYBODY'S business but their own. Smh seems like too many kids nowadays and not enough adults.

You are not working once you step foot in the door. Otherwise everytime I go to shop I should be getting paid, right? :)

Changing availability should be done off the clock, along with putting in time off, and requesting VAC/PH. Same with checking your schedule.

And yeah you shouldn't be shopping on the clock except during your meal, and you should try obscure the fact that you're working by wearing a jacket or taking your name tag off. However some stores allow you to buy food on your 15 (not a big deal IMO).

Again, I understand shopping on the clock is not allowed

If a TL/ETL/STL/XTL/Insert Name says "Make sure you update your time off or availability" my guess is it's work related.

Nope. Its never work related unless they specifically tell you to go do it right now. Changing your availability is personal HR matter that you do off the clock, just like setting up direct deposit, ordoing open enrollment for healthcare plans (I did that at home). I've always done eHR stuff while on break personally.

If a cashier ever asked me to let them off their lane so they could go put in a time off request or change their availability, I would probably just stare at them and tell them to wait for break.

Remember peeps they go through this "remember the rules" every year it seems right as 4th quarter gets going, so people don't do stupid shit and get themselves fired.

I had to do open enrollment on the clock since it required both customer service on the their end and targets since my info was so messed up.. HR had to be there to help get it straightened out.

If I have a cashier off checking their schedule, asking for time off, etc, that means I'm going to have back ups and the front lanes. It also means that people who have breaks and lunches to go on have a harder time going because we can't have everyone off the floor at the same time. I need my cashiers on the floor, not doing personal business they can take care off when on break.

Yep, this is the yearly reminder for the newbies of what you can do on company time and what to do on your time.
It's nothing new or different.

I do kind of agree that if they don't want you changing your availability on the clock it would behoove them to make the system accessible from home.

What I like is that they want my availability for black Friday, but can't tell me what hours they might need me for. I put down "What my TL wants" Cause I love how she works our In-Stocks for BF, most of us do the open one always comes in later..

I would be happy to do any of the HR related activities off the clock, but since changing all of the HR related activities to having to be done on the computer I don't think it is reasonable to require it to be done off the clock (and technically your break is NOT off the clock). I have had to wait up to 45 minutes to have access to a computer to do this because it was needed by someone that was on the clock. IMO that is not reasonable. I used to keep a couple of time off requests and punch correction sheets at home so I could fill them out and hand them in the next day. That isn't possible anymore. My time is valuable whether or not Target is paying for it. As for picking up lunch items on the way to punch out, that is not something that you have to do for your job and should be done on your own time. Plan ahead and pick up lunch items before your shift or bring in a lunch. That could add up to 10 extra minutes each day - doesn't sound like much, but multiply that by every employee in your store. Not everyone does it? Even more reason - up to 10 minutes a day is almost an hour's worth of payroll being spent each week so you can buy lunch. What makes you think that you should get paid for a "free" hour each week when nobody else is?

I think people's issue is that now they can't buy anything on their 15 minute breaks either.
