Yup, last year was the first time I can remember Target actually reducing open hours particularly during holidays.
This year we've been opening earlier in addition to staying open to midnight.
That early hour is just as dead as that last hour.

We had midnight closings last year and we even started the 7 am openings earlier last year.

That's retail for you. I got tired of doing it for 12 years(7 years at Kohl's and 5 years at Target). Now I'm working at an Amazon Fresh warehouse and happy that I don't have to deal with guests anymore or my hours getting cut and having to beg for more.

Closing at S&E certainly gets boring when we're open 'til Midnight. There's only so much zoning and lane reshop you can undertake, but the few guests who come my way get a bit of special treatment.
It just seems like a waste of money. Our store has a lot of broken or semi-functional front-end equipment -- think of security tag removal magnets (which can't possibly be all that expensive), payment-card readers, wrap-tag unclippers, even some of our (laugh at this if you will) hanger bins for individual lanes. Word has it this was a top-down decision by corporate. Oh well, I get paid the same even if it's awfully quiet.
