I had a situation last night where a guest came in to return two packs of hangers without a receipt, both packs were exactly the same. I told the guest that without a receipt, I am going to need her license to process the return, she handed me an out of state license. We were able to return one of the packs to a gift card. The other pack on the other hand, was prompting us to do an exchange within the same department. It didn't give me the option to place it on a gift card, like the other one did. I had told the guest that she can get anything in the store as long as it is over the exchange amount, as I was willing to override the items, and she can just pay the difference. The guest was very upset about this, and ended up just taking the other pack home. Does anyone know why the same exact item would show up like this?

Its been a few years since I did a no receipt return. A guest has only a limited number of no-receipt return transactions and amount before it will deny the exchange

Were each of the hangers over/under $5-10? If an item/transaction was under $5-10, the POS may prompt to return the last sale price to a giftcard usually. If the transaction is over $5-10, the guest will have to do an exchange.

Is the no-receipt exchange back to being done within the same dept again? Last I did returns it was any area.

Guests have an annual limit of $70 to do a no receipt return. It's possible that the guest has returned items in the past with no receipt and the second pack of hangers just put her over her limit.

This is the correct answer.

yes! it has to be the same first 3 digits of the DPCI, or else it will not allow you to exchange the merchandise. the only way to exchange it with other items would be to override the transaction by calling one of your leaders.

The annual limit isn't counted by calendar year...it is counted as a twelve month period....from first return (in any month...say, April) then the guest has until the following April before the twelve month count starts again.
