Question about cut hours and how I can approach my ETL?

Hello!

I was a transfer to my current store and I’m about to be two months in two weeks. I have my desired hours at 30 and I’m only getting 18 or 20 hours.

In the beginning I got 35 or 30 for one and the second week. I’m in fulfillment. Recently the new schedule came out and I’m at 6 hours only. This week they didn’t schedule me at all when I asked my ETL what happened he said it was mostly a glitch. I didn’t come in because my mom was in the hospital for an emergency surgery. I made my ETL know. Even so like I said I wasn’t even scheduled at all.

I want to ask how I approach my ETL about only getting six hours in the new schedule? I don’t have fully open availability I have 6 am to 2:30 pm Monday to Sunday. The thing is I was told my availability wasn’t gonna be an issue since they need transfers for a pilot program in FF. I also accepted because I’m planing to finish my last year at college.

My FF TL says I’m doing great in FF but frankly I’m staring to doubt it. He did ask he would put a word in to move me to gm if I wanted too since they need people there too but no update (I was formerly gm).

I wouldn’t mind cross training in market even or drive up. Tbh I’m just worried. I feel like nervous to say something but I feel I have no choice but to talk to my ETL.

At my store, your availability for FF would work really well. It's not uncommon for hours to be cut, but I agree with you that what you've seen does seem drastic.
I'd approach your ETL with a question along the lines of, "I know that hours will fluctuate and that my availability isn't wide open because of my class schedule. But I kind of need to know if I can expect more than 6 hours a week or if I should be looking to add a second job?"
This way, you're not threatening to leave (don't ever give someone an ultimatum unless you're actually read to follow through) and you're acknowledging the limitations of working retail, while expressing your need for more hours.
FWIW, I have open availability for early morning to mid-afternoon every day, preferred max hours of 35. And I've been getting scheduled for 25 hours or less lately. Was glad to pick up a POG shift today.
