So, I got my third week schedule post-training and it's only 19.50 hours! Second week post-training was 33.75! Did I mess up somewhere, or what? I mean they called me in twice during the week after my schedule when I wasn't scheduled for a 6 and 8 hour shift. I think I did well in them, only thing is I took "long" in zoning because I got meticulous about making sure everything was in the right price/place instead of it "looking pretty".

My friend has a job sort of lined-up for me, but it's a boring office job, $15/hr (5-days/week--MF), but it's 45-miles away (about 2-2.5/hrs in traffics)! This Target is 3 miles away. I don't care about medical benefits, I have them already for free (Thanks, Obama!).

PS. It's like my 3rd week at Target

Your hours are going to fluctuate widely based on the number of hours they have to give, the number of people they have available to work, and the alignment of the planets when they do the schedule. Welcome to retail.

LOL @ planets.

I'm fine with the rest. I just don't want it to do with my job performance. I'm the type of guy who strives to his best in every job I get. I'm not new to retail, although it's been a while.

When I started working at spot literally one year ago today, I had the exact problem. Sometimes I would only get 2-3 shifts a week IF I WAS LUCKY. It took about half a year but I now finally have a solid 35-40 hrs every week.

Happened to me too. I dropped from 35 to 21. It just happens. Once November comes around, you'll be getting a shit ton of hours again. And then in January.....welll...VACATION TIME! Heh...

New TMs seem to get lots of hours the first few weeks to give you experience. Then hours drop back down in favor of TMs that know their job well and do an excellent job (or the TMs who are buddies with whomever writes the schedule).

I would be all over that office job if I were you. Depending on how much you make at Target, $15 might not be much of a jump when you factor in gas money... BUT guaranteed 40 hours and a set schedule are massive perks.

Yeah... but office job is mundane... My car gets 13-15mpg; which means I'd be filling up gas every 3-4 days at $40-50 (counting traffic/etc). Factoring in gas money and travel time... I feel like take away money would be about the same. And truth to be told, this job is to pad my resume for a job gap, not for anything else. The one thing I love retail is working with people (guests), call me crazy but I love being around people. With an office job, it's always the same people, every day. I'm okay with an office job if it paid at least $20-25/hr and was in reasonable distance.

Does the office job offer decent insurance? Retirement? Advancement? Regular raise schedule? Representation?
Those kinds of things are worth considering too.
Often they can add up to more than $8 or $10 more an hour and even more down the road.
Also if one of your co-workers lives in your area, you could carpool and save a lot of money.
I'm not trying to talk you into the job, just tossing out some factors you might not have thought of.
I like people too and the action of retail is something I do enjoy but my office job is something that has made a huge difference in my life.

Does your new job offer health insurance? If so your free obamacare goes away.

The job is pretty stagnant. Moving up is hardly an option. My friend told me it's mundane office work, in front of a computer all day long. She lives nearby and we can carpool, but she's a manager and her hour varies a lot more than mine, so it will be hard. As far as benefits, it will after 6 months, as most jobs do.

I know you aren't trying to talk me out of it, but honestly, I have a 4-year job gap (personal issues) and I needed a job. I have a strong college education and 8+ years in my career field. But, unfortunately, they shy away from a job gap. I still my professional certification that I keep up regularly with CEs because damn if I have to take to those exams again. I just enjoy a job (right now) where when I clock out, I LEAVE that there. My previous jobs, it haunted and followed me to no end. And even though I got paid a high salary, I put 10-12 hours days, sometimes weekends and a pager on call and it burned me out. And personal issues took a toll on me on top off that. I went weeks without seeing friends and family.

After a while, yes. But being optimistic, all retail jobs I've ever had, I've gotten promoted to some sort of FT job within 6 months. But if not, it doesn't matter; my cut-off to qualify for obamacare is $1300-1350/mo average.
