Considering the home location is going to be one to the right/left/top/bottom fulfillment isn't going to have to look very hard to find it.
Depends what it is. HBA, for example, has a shitload of similar looking products that go close together, if not right next to each other on the shelves. Unless you want your zone completely wrecked by fulfillment having to pick through everything to find an item that scans right, you will put that shit exactly where it goes and nowhere else (unless store tied so we know where to check.) Same thing goes for Our Generation accessory packs as another example.
Seriously though, the best practice is for DBOs to do what they are supposed to do: if they have an out don't flex something else into it. Research it. Check if they have the product unlocated in the back. If they do not, then go to the SD and audit it out so that the store will be sent more of the product and can actually sell it to guests. That's what is supposed to happen.
I get what your saying and it totally makes sense but when you store tie it will only tie to a section. Not a specific shelf or peg. So wouldn't you be digging to find the right one anyway in your example? It would just be narrowed down to four feet instead of an entire aisle.
But that's the point. If there's no selenium sulfide and too much pyrithione zinc (no, honestly, I don't have eczema) and you need selenium sulfide, if the could is accurate you'll know it's zero. If it's not accurate you're going to tear the zone apart whether the pyrithione zinc is tied or not. If you need pyrithione zinc and the correct spot is empty the correct bottles will be 3 inches to the left, quite easy to see. That's true, but store tying is still extremely helpful. Let's say that I'm looking for Head & Shoulders. We sell a shit load of varities and they all look basically the same. First, I'm going to head to the exact shelf location. If what's there doesn't scan, I'll take a closer look at the surrounding area to see if I can possibly find the one I'm looking for. If I can't find it quickly, I'll be heading to the back to see if it's unlocated in the back. Not back there? Well, it's back to the floor and this is where the zone is going to unfortunately get wrecked. Now, I'm going to have to go through every goddamn bottle of Head & Shoulders on the shelf. No way to do that nicely. However, if you've done me the courtesy of store tying it, then I know it's there before heading to the back. This gives me more time and I can be a whole lot nicer in helping to maintain your zone while searching for what I need.
But, really let's avoid either of us being irritated, me because you've flexed and you because I've wrecked your zone. Don't flex. Audit and let's get the right product in the location so we can sell that shit.
(I should not this is just an example. Anyone caught flexing anything in personal care at my store will be lucky if all they get is a bottle of Head & Shoulders shoved up their ass sideways by our DBO. She's a stickler for precision. It's great as our YTD INF% in her section is under 2%. 😊 )
