Okay listen…
The average person is awake from 7am-11pm
us openers are awake from 3am-7pm. I’ve been opening for 3+ years.

Putting that into perspective compared to the “average” persons sleep schedule, 7pm for us openers feels like 11pm… so a closing shift working till 11pm is compared to working until 3am.. Driving around 4 hours past your sleep schedule puts an unnecessary risk on you life safety and well being.

All the sudden Bryan Cornell snapped his fingers and said ‘’from now on we are forcing all TLs to close, and if you don’t like it or can’t physically do it, you’re fired! i don’t care how much you’ve done for the company, or how long you’ve worked here, if you don’t obey, your putting in your resignation’’

i wish someone could help me. I love my job at target, 10 years now. but because i am to scared to put my life in danger to work till 11pm (3am for the average sleep schedule) after being in multiple car accidents after falling asleep…

They left me with 3 choices…

1: I risk my life working 4 hours past my sleep schedule adding and unnecessary risk falling asleep at the wheel, not knowing if i’ll be alive the next day to go work
2: Prove i’m disabled? by spending all my money going to a doctor.
3: Get fired and become homeless.

What should i do?

Maybe you can get a doctor's order that you can't work past a certain time? The previous incidences of drowsy driving accidents are very concerning. Safety First

"[Brian Cornell] said he used to fall victim to some pretty common harmful habits: going about your day with little sleep, drinking coffee for meals and not leaving any time for post-work exercise or relaxation ..."

"'[Workers are] fatigued, they’re exhausted, they haven’t eaten and you can’t expect them to deliver their best,' Cornell said."

As someone who works the opposite, I can see your point. I'm a night owl and a closer exclusively, and if they told me I had to open once a week I'd be livid. I do not get up before 10:30am at the earliest.

Are they giving you the next day off? I would imagine they would have to, because having you work until closing and then come back for 4:00am would really suck, and may even go against your state's labor laws.

I agree with @Ringwraith917 that you may want to check into a doctor's note if drowsy driving is a health concern.

And pay no mind to @Captain Orca. For some reason he likes to be rude and bully people on here.

Are you 3am every day? Because I was told that GM1/ Inbound TL that is 3am or 4am every day for the truck is exempt from the closes. I’m considered GM2 and do the truck only 2-3 days a week at 3am, so technically I’m supposed to have a closing shift. My district isn’t pushing it, but I have had a closing shift here and there to help out with coverage.

It does suck because I will literally have 2-3 3am shifts and then my closing shift will be into a clopen. I’ll get off at 11:30pm and have to be back at 7am or 8am the next morning. I can’t push the next shift any later than that because it’s generally followed up by a 3am. I’m thankful my district isn’t pushing it, but some of my peers act like it’s the end of the world I don’t have more closes even though none of them ever come in to open the store.

That's ridiculous. Anyone who opens the store or comes in super early for truck reguiarly should be exempt from closing. There's plenty of later dayshift or midshift leaders who can close.

It wasn't so bad when I was a manager at Sears because we closed at 10 and the opener usually had to be there for 8:00 am, so there was still plenty of time between shifts even if you had to clopen. But Target's hours are too crazy for clopenings IMO.

Not to mention what it does to your circadian rhythm.
It's not enough to give you a day off in between different types of shifts because it takes much longer to adjust.
Wonder what their boutique of health & wellness has to remedy THAT?!

So, corporate, why not just hire people, when there is an opening, as strictly a "night manager"? They know from the beginning and agree to such, that they ONLY close. If there was an opening during the day and they wanted to come day-side so be it, but until then they are only close. Others during the day who hate the night shift would only have to close occasionally.

Just a warning about going the doctor's note route: You still have to be able to do the "essential functions" of the job under the ADA law, even with a doctor's note. If Target deems working one night a week an essential function, you could be literally providing documentation that you aren't qualified to do the job anymore and end up getting demoted (or worse). That's not to say it isn't something to look into, but do so educated about the potential risks.

They already have that. All stores have a closing team leader. The closing team leader only works closing shifts. They want all leaders to be able to close occasionally.
