Most of you know I left Target in 2021 as a consumable TL. I saw Target pays more than my current job and I've been thinking of applying ( doubt I'd get an interview) but I have to know what being a leader is like these days? I'd go back as a service and engagement as that's my core background.

In my area the quality of leadership has declined drastically. Which has definitely reduced the quality of tms. Not all stores are bad my store at the moment is and has been in good shape most of the year. Some stores in my district are hundreds and hundreds of hours of set workload behind and 10s of thousands of pricing behind. Its insane and definitely a big difference from store to store. Definitely give it a look before you go. No surprise front end is perpetually understaffed and somehow hours are only getting worse each year.

Overall thoughts. For now, more expectations on store leaders than 5 years ago. People are in general harder to work now than 5 years ago-eg 5 years ago ppl would not hide their phones and be on them through out the day vs now some ppl care less, guests demand more now-eg they cannot hear no, etc.and in a flash ask for Corporate's number.
That being said Target team is still the same tight knit team and we always get by and depend on another. Not the easiest job or most flattering one, but definitely a lot worse jobs out there.
You also may want to look at pay. Leader and TM pay have increased but still at bottom of retail in my area.

Former Backroom TL here. I’ve been out of the soul-destroying Hellscape that is Target for a while, but from what I hear from the current sufferers, it’s 100x worse than it was when I was there, and that is indeed saying something. Stress levels are off the charts. Everything seems to be running behind, and metrics, as always, are king. The store is woefully understaffed, workload is ridiculous, and expectations grow more unrealistic daily as hours continually shrink the numbers of TMs available to complete tasks. Even if a department was properly staffed, which never seems to happen, people are pulled to do fulfillment to the point that other tasks cannot be completed anyway. Of course, senior management is right there on the TL’s back saying “Your department had x numbers of hours, why aren’t these tasks completed?” And Heaven help you if you reply “ Because 85% of those hours were spent doing fulfillment”.

Things seem to be tough company-wide, but ASANTS, your prospective store may not be that bad. A through investigation of working conditions at the store might be a worthwhile endeavor before making your decision. It’s not like it used to be, that’s for sure. Fast, Fun and Friendly is gone, and it’s not coming back. Whatever you decide, Good Luck, I hope it works out for you.
