I’ve worked for Target so long I remember when JCPenneys almost bought Target…when Daytons and Marshall fields were still in business. Expense rate 98 started the cost cutting so no company or Penney’s would ever happen again.

Yes, Greg did run financials into the ground. I recall my STL leaving Target for Canada, she sold everything here (her spouse was a dentist so he even closed shop) and literally overnight the Canada operations were gone. I always wondered if I could have supported my spouse and moved to a different county if I was an established professional with a brick and mortar building and well liked in the local area. To each their own...

IIRC, after the stores shut down Target had to pay unemployment wages for all the Canuck TMs who lost their jobs (ALL of them) as part of a Canadian labor law. All of the buildings (former Zellers stores) were sold, what little merch that was left had been sent back to the US.
Pretty dismal failure all around.

It abruptly shut down shortly after Cornell took over as
CEO. Its problems have been discussed numerous times but the biggest issue was inventory. Target didn’t do its research to figure out how hard it would be to get product from D.C. to stores so the locations were full of empty shelves from the moment they opened. Also, Target took over the Zellers chain and assumed all their leases without carefully looking to see each locations individual financial performance and geographical area. In short, it was over expanding too quickly without doing the proper research.
