Like most have said, go for HR.
If they interview for it, highlight your organizational skills, your ability to multitask and prioritize tasks, and how you promote a fast, fun, and friendly work environment.
Having knowledge of Excel and Word would help. Targets payroll system is very different from QuickBooks, Peachtree, or any home HRIS or payroll software, so no need to learn an outside program.
Your primary responsibilities will be staffing (scheduling interviews, doing orientation), training (training schedules, and following up on training and learning plans), scheduling (creating and maintaining the weekly schedule, swap shifts), and payroll (fixing punches, keying vacation hours and sick time)
There's a hundred other small tasks that will be dropped into your lap, so learn to prioritize and learn when to partner with others to get things done. You'll need to build relationships with the leadership in your store to make your life easier and you should also take the time to get to know the people in your store. For years, I knew every single person in our store by first and last name, as well as all of their work centers they're trained in, their preferred work centers, and their scheduling preferences. You will have to make yourself available to answer all kinds of questions and listen to people complain about schedules, pay, hours, team members, team leads, and do it with a smile. Plus, you'll learn this number (1800-394-1885) by heart, because you'll be calling them with all of your HR questions.
With all of that said, it really is the most rewarding position in the store once you get the hang of it, so definitely go for it, and I'll be here if you have any questions at all.
