MEGATHREAD Hang Me (The Softlines Thread)

Speaking of polo shirts, how does everyone else handle it when a female guest asks for polo shirts? We don't have polo shirts in the RTW area, nor do we have any school uniform polo shirts left in the girls' area. I've been judging size and then directing the ladies to either the men's department or suggesting an XL boy's polo shirt, but a lot of women are upset over having only a man's/boy's shirt to choose from. And the answer is always "I started a new job and I need it for tomorrow" so I can't suggest Target.com as an alternative.

Same thing with non-slip shoes. The answer is always "tomorrow" when I ask how soon a pair is needed, so what can I suggest that will be non-slip that is carried in stores?

If Target was smart they would have one table in RTW with one side polos and the other nice khakis. Easily the most looked for items in softlines.

"Try Wal-Mart. That's where I get my polos and I know they carry non-slip shoes."
I've never seen non-slip shoes at Target.

I had a guest settle for the white Merona button up in RTW instead of going to another store for a polo.

So I am one of three SL tms who are going to help flow push carts and Z-rails. At first I was excited cause my ETL said it'd be a 6am-2:30pm gig, now its going to be either 8-4:30 or 9-5:30 so we're on the floor to help guests. Wtf.

Yes, that's right. Everyone working while guests are shopping. Will you be in a specific area? We will start soon, with specific areas for each tm. So, if your area is kids, you will work racks and carts, do price change, set pogs, pull and backstock, research, and do adjacencies for kids every week. This is so we can have experts, and sellers in all areas while guests are shopping.

Up front, I have a very high level of paranoia. Today something happened, I don't know if I judged the situation correctly or if I'm just being super paranoid.

I was zoning infants/toddlers and in the very back I found some hangers on the ground. Two were full sized hangers marked as medium, one was a tiny pants hanger but it also had a medium tag. My first thought was "Where are the clothes that belong to these hangers?" since those hangers have no business being in this section. I know they weren't there an hour before, from my first run-though in that area.

I tried to get in touch with AP but apparently they weren't in yet. The GSTL heard me out, tracked me down, and handed me register tape, a rubber band and a pen and told me to note exactly where and when I found the hangers.

The GSTL wasn't there when I brought the bundle to guest services and the team member there wanted to just put the hangers in the softlines cart. I told her that AP might need them and she was pretty much whatever. At the end because I insisted they stay at the desk for the GSTL or AP, whoever got there first, she finally put them down but it was clear she though my insistence was stupid.

I know I'm paranoid, but the GSTL didn't tell me to shrug it off, I was told to note everything. But I am wondering if I was overly worried or if team member I gave them to was downplaying it too much.

No, I won't have a specific area. I wish :(. We still have plano, pricing, instocks, and backroom to do all that stuff. I am trained in all those areas though (not backroom certified but can pull and backstock). I would love to be responsible for my own area, but it'll never happen in our high volume store.

I'm sick of the changes. Not the end to end, but they did a little makeover to our fitting room to make it look more like a lobby or whatever corporate called it. It looked nice at first glance but then I realized all the stuff I need is missing, things I once relied on are in places I can't reach, etc. Then I have 3tls (SL, Sr sl, vml) and the SF etl and etl-ge with differing opinions on how we should be putting the "new" focus on guest service into effect so I'm getting diff orders constantly. We don't have a rack for hangers. I'm digging through a cart to find hangers. Everyone who works fr is putting off hanging stuff because it's annoying so you walk into these dense carts of a million unhung items. And leaders keep telling me to smile more and engage more. The guests walk in and don't want to talk to me. I start with polite chatter and their response is "so do I need a number or do I just go?" Between all the changes, the inconsistent leadership, and the guests being awful (leaking bodily fluids in swimwear, peeing on the carpet, not bringing things out, etc), I'm stressed the hell out. I'm gonna have to find a new shrink :/

I'm not even a FR TM. And they keep bs-ing me when I ask if I can go back to working regular SL shifts.

I'm sorry this all sounds crazy and hyperbolic lol but it's hard to put in writing how awful and annoying it is without sounding crazy.

You don't sound crazy.... there's a great deal of change and "talk" occurring right now. In reference to your Fitting Room "stuff" and hangers; let your SLTL know that there is a struggle keeping your "newly made-over" Fitting Room "Brand" . To keep it clutter-free and inviting to your Guests, you need your equipment accessible for efficiency. While your stuff may not be in the exact location as it was prior to your make-over; be adaptable. Help find a solution for the efficiency; starting with a new location for a bar/rod installed for your hangers ( in a discreet location)...... digging them out of a cart is counter-productive, and messier, IMO. As for your Guest's reaction to your "service" efforts; that will take a little time. We, as a company, need to re-train our Guests from a self-service experience to a "let me help you" experience. At my store, we are asking our FR attendants to escort the Guest to their FR stall, making small-talk w/ them about their merchandise. Part of that conversation includes asking how many items they are trying on. We also "remind" them, that they can hang their "unwanted" items on the cart/rod (?) as they exit the FR. It's been a small adjustment on our part; but we've seen huge progress w/ less shortage, clean stalls, and happier, engaged Guests. :) Lastly...... I don't believe your Leadership Team is BS-ing you on going back to your "regular" SL shifts. With the new A&A E2E roll-out, there is NO regular SL shift. It's either A&A (push flow, research, p/c, pog, etc) or it's a FR shift.

Do you not still have a small offstage closet for supplies like hangers? Rolling racks are pretty cheap, and there are a few different kinds, that can be ordered. A nice new one would look much nicer than a cart!

I swear I'd think you work at my store except we don't have a Srtl for softlines. Our fitting room as also been crazy; we never come clean with reshop anymore. The place is a mess. It's making everyone crazy. No one has a clue what to do. I also have been in the fitting room nearly every day and want my regular SL shifts back :(

ASANTS. At my store, instocks, price change, and POG still do their thing. If you're scheduled SL, you do the usual stuff- reshop, zone, and sometimes maybe help flow.

We had a rack that broke before the makeover. I used other methods of holding the hangers at first. We had a couple of those bars that look like [ on the wall and I was using those at one point, but they're gone now. They replaced it with one bar in a hard to reach spot. And the bar doubles as purgatory for items that are missing a piece to the set. I used a metrocart at one point, but something got in the way of that. They did order something for the hangers, but it ships slooowly and all my other temporary ideas keep going away. I look for solutions and make suggestions and they'll agree with me and say they're gonna make it happen, but then it doesn't happen. And I do remind them. I don't wanna get into all the issues, but it's a bunch of small things that when combined make everything difficult for TMs and guests alike.

I had a floor shift last night before writing that other post. It reminded me how much I like it. And it wasn't a good shift at all haha..

@sprinklesontop research and push are things we helped with before e2e. Flow still does the bulk of the push. They're just scheduled in softlines as "style" when they do it. VMTMs are the only sltms who do pogs and research officially, but they're scheduled under VM when they're supposed to be doing that. I didn't actually ask them for "regular" sl shifts. I asked them when I could get out of the fr lol. I wanna go back to being scheduled as softlines regularly, though. They keep giving me vague responses about when I'll be back on the floor. That's what I mean by bs-ed. They led me to believe it wouldn't be this long. They told me why they moved me in there. I'm better at the guest service part, I'm better with technology, and I sort further than the other ladies. But they also told me I'd be able to go back to the floor or at least get a few shifts once I trained someone to do it like me. They aren't giving me the time with the new tms to train them, though lol.

@Doglover89, we're not coming clean most days. When I left, I had 3 unsorted carts in the FR + one metrocart full of unsorted things fr guests didn't want. And as I was walking out, my replacement was walking in with 2 more carts. The moment I think I can get to the end of anything, here comes more.

Sorry about the novel.

So my store is partways into the A&A 2.0 remodel and I can't say I'm all that impressed so far. The muted wall color is an improvement, but other than that it's just track lighting, a few new fixtures, and more disembodied legs standing around. But keeping the same old dingy carpet kills any sort of boutique image they were going for, which is sad because those white fixtures would be quite pretty in a classier setting. The market revamp looks much better (pfresh store; not impressed we have such a massive booze section, but only one choice of applesauce now? In some cases they've condensed 2-3 aisles into just one.) But admiring it is killed by the loads of push vehicles clogging up the aisles all day so I kind of have to run into an aisle, grab, and run out. Maybe the home innovation revamp will wow me.

And the bar doubles as purgatory for items that are missing a piece to the set.

The rest of your post, I am so sorry for your frustration. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Especially when the unsorted reshop carts keep coming.

This one though has a simple solution. Salvage it all out. And once you've got it gone, if a partial set comes your way and you can't make a matching set on your shift, salvage it out at the end of your shift.

I'm really aggressive about getting rid of partial sets and my TL thinks it's great because it doesn't build up anymore.

I'm usually pretty good when it comes to charging out and finding missing pieces. On weekday mornings (as long as I don't walk in to a million carts) I walk around finding items and dpcis. When I started I was trained to do that stuff for my area as I find it when I'm on the floor. I wasn't dumping everything for the FRO like they are now. I think that change makes it build up much quicker.

The bar was clean last I was in there, though. We cleaned it last week for a visit lol. I'm gonna try to stay on top of it like you do

Both closers called out Saturday night. Sunday was apparently a nightmare for the zone and we came in to 9 carts of unsorted reshop this morning. Our SRTL came in at 6am and has spent her entire shift at the fitting room doing what she does best - sorting, hanging, folding, directing traffic. She pulled every available TM on the floor from brand to VM and we all pushed go backs that she prepped all shift. When I left she almost had us caught up and I suspect by the time she leaves they'll be back on track. One of the reasons we love her. If only all leadership would not only SEE the mess but PROVIDE real leadership in getting out of it not to mention pitching in and helping the way she always does. We're lucky to have her.

I... Thought we worked in the same store until the part after this. I had 9 unsorted this morning, there were call outs Saturday, and Sunday night was... Well clearly terrible because I guess I left myself 9 carts lol (clopened the fitting room)

Next week SL starts pushing the truck in my store. Word on the street is that I'm going to be responsible for pushing all hanging BY MYSELF with one other coworker responsible for the folded, etc. in carts. Does this sound right? I'm pissed. We get 5 trucks a week, and I am scheduled for only 3 of those days but my ETL is making me switch my schedule so that I'll be there for 4 of the 5. Why do I feel like this is going to be an epic cluster f*ck?

That's how we've been doing it at my store for the past few months. It usually works, but Saturday is kind of ify.

Before e2e, we had 1 z rack pusher.

What volume are your stores? I'm in an A, and we've always had 2-3 on racks and 1-2 on carts/other stuff. Do you come clean after every truck? We rarely if ever do and that's with the 4 regular softlines flow folks working, plus sometimes us SL folks or other flow people helping.

We are smaller than you, but our z rack pusher also did shoes (and sometimes Accs). Typically we get 4 racks RTW, 1 men's, 1 perf/sleep, 4 NIT.

WOW !! That's waaaaay too much for 1 person ! We have a Team of 3 that push flow (hanging) each truck; and 1 TM that does folded (carts). These 3 TMs have specific departments, for consistency sake, and the push goes quickly because they are "specialists" in their zones. They also take care of go-backs and zoning in their departments. If the truck is heavy, myself (VMTL) or the SLTL will assist the TMs. We also push the shoe flow as a Team (SL Huddle). No cluster f*#k at our store....... well, as far as SL is concerned ! ;)
