I know I've ready it somewhere on the boards before that shifts must have 8 hours between. Can anyone confirm this is accurate information taken from spot employee documents? I don't have my folder with my documents on me today but just checked my schedule. I'm scheduled for 5:00 - 11:45 PM on 11/28, and then 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM on 11/29 which wouldn't give 8 hours between those shifts.

I'm not sure whether to make waves by disputing my schedule, but really don't want to work an 8 hour shift on less than 4 hours of sleep.

Also - I'm a seasonal hire and listed my max hours per week at 20. I'm scheduled for more during Thanksgiving week, which is actually fine with me as I'll have several days off my 'day job' that week so the extra spot hours are not a problem. However, I'm also scheduled for 29 hours the following week, which will be tough on top of my regular 40-hour work week. Do I also remind them that my max hours per week is 20 and ask for a schedule change for that week? Thanks for any advice.

That 8 hour rule might be a state thing. At my store the HRTM told me it was 7 hours. That being said, I've had as little as 6 hours between 8 hour shifts before.

Eight hours between shifts used to be a standard for the company, now it seems to be a suggestion.
If you are only going to get 4 hours of sleep I'd fight it.
Just ask to come in an hour or two later, see what they come up with.

As to the 20 hours, you do want to keep them toeing the line on that one.
You can say, "This one week is okay but I can't do it again." but then you have watch the schedule like a hawk because they will slip.

8 hours is bullshit. I'd be quitting if they pulled that on me.

There are some states that do require a certain amount of time between shifts within 24 hour period.

Company wise, the 8-hour rule is not an exactly on paper policy but its highly pushed amongst the stores.

I won't tell you the tiny gap between my shift thurs/Fri but it's way less than 8. You can waive that gap so long as it's within state rules and your tls are ok with it.

For black Friday it's less enforced than most weeks. Same with total hours.

If it's an issue for you and they did not ask before writing that schedule say something. Climb the ladder if you must and be clear that you feel it would be unsafe to drive without the sleep between shifts.

The hours thing is harder. Keeping them to a max without getting restricted a ton can be hard. Try finding coverage if you can instead, as well as talking to whomever does your workcenters schedule.

It's just a courtesy in my state, no law states you must have X number of hours between shifts. That being said, it's rare to see just 8 hours (or less) between shifts at my store.

Say something on both counts, ASAP. That's ridiculous! Since you are seasonal, they really don't care if they burn you out. They just need you another 5 weeks before they let you go.

By the time you get home, unwind and finally fall asleep, you will probably end up with less than 4 hours of sleep. It is incredibly disrespectful to you to have scheduled your shifts so close together without asking if you can, or want to, handle that kind of scheduling. If they are short staffed, it's not your problem. However, by scheduling you like that they are expecting you to solve THEIR problem.

The gap between shifts is unreasonable. When I had a maximum hours for school, they never once honored it. I'm not sure they ever take that into consideration when doing a schedule.

My ETL-GE has scheduled me for 3 "Clopens" so far this holiday season. Not fun, especially since our store closes at midnight and we don't have salesfloor appropriately staffed so they ask me to stay after CO to help Hardlines/Softlines. All 3 times I ended up staying until 1 AM. On one of the "Clopens" it was a Sunday night, and I had come in at 7AM the next morning for setting the ad board. What fun.

So yeah. It really depends on how much whoever is making your schedule values having well-rested employees.
