My call-out wasn't approved?

You mean your request for using sick/vacation time off towards your call out was denied? There is no approval process for calling out through the app. It simply just informs the leaders that you are calling out.

There's a number of reasons it could be. The likely reason is you simply didn't have enough time to cover the shift. Now they could apply whatever you have for purposes of getting pay, but unless you have enough sick hours to cover the entire shift, you're still going to get the same conversation you would have if you had applied no time. Another reason is they assumed you put in the wrong type. Maybe you have plenty of sick time, but put in a request for vacation time and they felt a need to deny it and talk with you about putting the correct type in (or possibly they just went ahead and corrected it for you). I suppose another reason could be inconsistencies with your time card they need to follow up on (you applied your your request to the wrong day and/or you have punches that day which would read as confusing for them).

Unlikely it would have anything to do with your reasoning for calling out being unsatisfactory for them, but I suppose they could deny on those grounds.
