Promoting/ ETL positions

Recent communication quoted a certain number of TLs that have moved into ETL roles this year so far.
Although I know there are various reasons for an ETL position to open up, I can’t help but think that it’s due to the struggling company, unrealistic standards, and low raises.

All this to say, it has lead to many ETL openings as well. As someone who has been weary of promoting, (and adamant that I would rather leave Target than be an ETL), I would love to hear thoughts from those who have moved from TL or VM to ETL.
What ETL positions do you think are most desirable? Most challenging?

Thoughts on HR ETL since it is the only one not directly running a sales floor team and freight?
Beginning to wonder if HR ETL could give me enough job experience to eventually leave retail.

Are there any ETLs out there not worked to the bone with long hours?

Thanks in advance!

Funny. I promoted from Tl to Etl inbound and even tho I had payroll to schedule in my department I still worked 12-14h days.
12 Etl’s in the building but I was the only Etl overnight therefore the standards for me was totally different from the other Etl’s, the expectation for me was I have a closed store therefore I had to be in everyone’s department once push was done.

I left Target over a year ago , recently my inbound Tl reached out to me to say he was offered Etl position and I strongly suggested that he is better of with his 39$ an hour than being Etl due to the long hours he would have to put in.
You could end up working 45-50h a week or more and still get paid for 40h no matter what.

You don’t get to choose which position so asking which we preferred is silly.
They could tell you at interviews they need you for hr then tell you right before your first day that you’ll be in style.

It is up to them, not you. When you agree to take a promotion you are agreeing to be in any etl position. They could move you at any time. If you’re in a metro, you don’t get to pick the store either.

When I promoted my contract said I was expected to work a 50 hour workweek year round. But there were many 60s.

I had a very close friend that was etl hr for 20 years in many different volume stores. She left the company and couldn’t get an hr job. Cause she didn’t have any experience using the apps/systems other companies used. Using Target only systems is a drawback. She ended up taking night classes and got back into hr a year later.

Thanks for the reply! I didn’t think about the aspect of using target only HR systems. That makes sense though that it would be a hindrance when trying to leave.
I have been debating doing some classes or program through guild as a means to get out of target as well, this may be a better option it sounds like, based off your friends experience.

Thanks for the reply! This is a good reminder. I have always been weary of ETL positions due to the long hours while being salaried, but then was starting to feel more curious about it as positions have been opening up.
People always speak highly of “life after target” though, and I think that may be where I’m ready to focus my energy.
Just need to figure out how to do that and where I can transfer my skills to get a job outside of retail but not take too big a paycut.

HR EtL do a lot more than just HR stuff. ETL’s do get shifted around si you could start HR and end up GM, Style or any other department.
That is true. I have definitely seen people be pulled around at target based on company needs. Thanks for the reminder! I needed it.

HR ETL still has to work all over the place, cover on the floor, open/close, weekends, AND still get the HR stuff done. They are the scapegoat if culture falls, and are responsible for hiring enough folks to run the store and then explaining to them all why hours are being cut. Wouldn’t touch that role for a directors salary.

Which role is definitely a choice. There should be a discussion on which one they are offering you, and you're free to say no if they offer you one you don't want. They CAN move you, but you CAN say no. I get there's a lot of back and forth with this kind of thing, but you can kick it back to them if it really comes to that.

I declined an ETL promotion to S&E 3 times before I got the ETL role I wanted. If your district leadership is strong arming you or forcing you into a role, you probably don't want to be an ETL under them anyway because that culture will be applicable to their business leadership as well.
