Anyone quit Target for much better retail stores (Macy's, Kohls, & Primark), and even better opportunities like for pursuing jobs in teaching

So I quit Target on February 14th 2023 (6 months ago) which was the best decision I ever made. I was hired as a seasonal and was kept on store after Christmas, although manager knew that I was too interested to be stucking working on the store. That being said I did not got laid off, or anything, I just gave two weeks notice because of the store being far, and lack off employee discount for overpriced items. Currently I work at Primark at the mall I am getting everything in 1/3 the amount of what I paid in Target, plus I have employee discount which I can use not just in the store, but any food court, and grocery stores . Although there is still many things wrong in my stores (micromanagement, no 15 min break, mandatory security checks on employees when entering and exiting the stores), this stores is nowhere as shitshow as Target. And the place I currently work at is only 3.6 miles away (7 minutes commute), which is significantly closer distance in compare to Target which was 12.5 miles away (30 minutes commute). I did not have license so I was fucked traveling 12.5 miles away daily with Uber/Lyft 2/3 of time since there was no public transportations that directly goes on the area I work at. Note that I have working at this store from Oct 2022-Feb 2023 and I did not got my license and car until Dec 2022.

When I was in the store, everything I tried to buy like good clothes or staff like that are $50 to $60. Same with foods and groceries which is ridiculously expensive like you would spending between $20 to $30. The thing that most frustrating me that small bag of chips cost like $8-$12 which is ridiculous. On top of that Target refuse to give me any employee discount in their stores (even more a cup of Starbucks coffee). I once had to pay $20 for a small cup of Starbucks coffee. I even tried to get food in Wegmans, they are still attempted to excessively charge me money for simple slice of Pizza, and even refuse to give Target employees any discount. The reason for Wegmans charging excessively, $18 for a slice of Pizza, is that most full-time Target employees goes to Wegmans to eat lunch and dinner.

Target also made an error with payroll multiple times. Like they took more taxes than what they need to be. Like I was working 40 hours and still making 512.5, where I should be making at least 1000 even after them taking taxes off. I brought this up to the HR and store owner regarding that issue, and they ended up investigating I am losing more taxes than normal. The investigation continued for 2 weeks, and they realized that companies have made an error with a payroll. As a result, HR agreed to mail me the money that I have lost due to excessive tax deduction through paper check. This should not have been an issue if my store even allowed.

Not to mention that Target ETL and HR has shown passive aggressiveness towards trainers and employee, at least I worked on Target. ETL and HR in my stores are hit or miss to be honest. ETL and HR supposed to be our advisor, and mentor, who was suppose give us advice 'what is right' and 'what is wrong?' you know what I am trying to say. Like if you have issue with colleague or manager (at least my current stores), the HR will be there to help resolve conflict. In Target, HR has been dismissive about every question and concerns I had. For example, when I tried reaching to ETL and HR about if they can electronically send me paycheck, they indirectly said NO and told me that 'this branch does not send electronic paycheck, only paper check allowed and needs to be picked from the store'. Since my 90 day probation almost passed and have 15 days left to end, I tried asking them if they will transfer me to nearest Target location there answer is still NO and their reasoning is that 'I can apply and ask their referral once 90 days has passed'. I tried talking with another nearest store and they told me 'the spots are limited for transfer employee and seats filled quickly'. I felt like HR and ETL were there to sabotage me than helping me.

Surprisingly, I have better team leader and departmental trainer in Target. I even have departmental trainer on Instagram, I used to contact him when had questions or concerns about anything. Same with asset protection specialist who was friendly too. I used to play board games, and puzzle games with him on breakroom during every 15 min break. Unlike Target management team, Primark management teams and asset protection are out to get you. Primark departmental manager even refuse to give 15 min break to employees because it will slow down entire business, and the store is way too understaffed. Lots of people quit because of lack of 15 min break as retail is already mentally challenging and no 15 minute minute might deter their mental and physical health even worse since they are likely dealing with lots of issues other than dealing with rude customers and managers. Yes, I have been getting pretty good feedback from my manager and HR in regards to my performance in Primark. But I am still worried and fear of my career, since I have been berated by some other managers in Primark for not working on department I was not assigned on.

My question is : Any of you quit Target for other retail jobs like Macy's, Kohl's, Primark, Lululemon, and even tech retail stores (Apple, T-mobile, and Verizon), and vice versa for more opportunities better employee discount, flexible hours? If you left Target for fast food, and coffeehouse stores like Starbucks, Pizzahut, Chipotle, and/or Taco Bell that's fine, but would you explain why tho? Also have anyone did or consider leaving Target for teaching opportunities whether it is for substitute teacher position or for school teacher position? Please feel free to share.

The reason I asking this question is cause I already have second job aligned in substitute teacher position and I am planning on leaving this retail job altogether once I get promotion as a school teacher. I can't afford leaving retail now for part-time sub teacher position since I need money for masters, and possibly for good cars?

I left Target due to health issues but I found it was best for me to get out of retail altogether.

Some people are wired for retail and more power to them. It takes a special person to do it and I think everyone should spend a little time in retail to understand the struggle.

However I realized it wasn’t good for my mental health with my physical issues declining. I currently work in my dream job (sports writing) and I don’t have to go to work. I get to go to work.

I hope you find happiness in your next role

I can only tell you about working at a Macy's D.C. Storeside is probably not as bad comparatively speaking, but the company itself is run by callous, greedy, soulless capitalist pigs.

Here is why: their hiring standards at D.C.s are absolutely, totally non-existent. They have none. Anything that walks in the door is promptly hired without any sort of background check. Yes, you can give them your prison ID when they're onboarding you. It's a literal halfway house. Each Q4 they hire several thousand seasonals and this adds another 20 - 40 minutes coming in and leaving since there is only one entrance and exit choked with traffic. Near-accidents and fender-benders are common, along with the very high chance that a psycho with face tats and a skinful of crank will jump out of the struck vehicle shrieking and wielding a knife. The vast majority of "people" who work there show up to work to have sex on company time (often leaving their biohazard used condoms lying around inside and outside the facility) steal company time and merchandise, smoke crack/shoot up in the restrooms, and stand around in large groups in each department and blocking the paths of those who are trying to work. Basically, all the horrifying bullshit you can expect from the lowest, dirtiest, stupidest, ugliest, most worthless section of the lumpenproletariat.

This is not the least bit exaggerated. The company cares about one thing and one thing only, and that's hitting their onboarding metrics. They are more than willing to accept the risk of spilling actual blood to do so, because they will, if they haven't already, hire an active shooter who will make Virginia Tech look like nothing. Very recently (about a year after I quit) they hired a seasonal creepy fuck who turned out to be, and I shit you not, wanted in another state for sexual assault/battery and first degree murder. He got arrested at the facility and extradited back to wherever he was from. That should tell you all you need to know about what kind of company Macy's is. Absolute cunts, 0/10 fuck 'em.

IMHO retail burns out a lot of people because they never get weekends off or two days in a row off.

It took Target forever to realize giving TLs every other weekend off was a good idea though it didn't apply to TMs.

Also younger workers in the future will have different career paths like retail, banking, etc. that they switch every four or five years.

I'm not sure I understand this part. What do you mean that Target refused to give you an employee discount? I'm not sure how they could possibly do that, when you were there you would have just used your TM number. And why would you expect a competing store to give you a discount for working somewhere else?

Maybe they didn’t want to get a red card and never had cash or a check.

I think Macy's and Kohl's will be out of business soon though. They are struggling.

Kohl's has a chance IMO as long as they realize they can't keep on brazenly taxing their customers forever (why the fuck would you pay $59.99 sale price for an $80 Nike hoodie when you can cop the same one for $29.99 after it turns into liquidated clearance and gets shipped off to Ross/TJ Maxx after season). I went to Kohl's earlier this year to buy socks and underwear but ended up leaving them on the shelf after I saw that dummy stupid markup like anybody these days has enough disposable income to pay $30 for 6 pairs of socks. I will give them one thing though, the e-ink price signs Kohl's uses are a galaxy-brain strat that you hardly ever see the likes of in retail anymore.

Better example: Home Depot and Lowes. Even sooner these poor fuckers will find themselves in a world of shit for the simple fact that nobody is out here buying or owning a house except Boomers, and Boomers are already about to be on the endangered species list. No Boomers, no sales. Yeah the rest of us will totally be buying shit for our houses that we bought with our $12 an hour at 15 hours per week....SIKE

Some of the early stage Gen Xers can manage to afford homes too.
They managed to avoid the imploding of the American dream and despite being labelled slackers/losers jumped right on the Boomer bandwagon.

I've gotten 3 days in a row off for the last 2.5 years. And yes, I work 40h/wk. ASANTS.

oh hey 1994 was the same year I flunked private school kindergarten lol/lmao

my old man still misses that 4,000 bucks/semester he was paying for me to stare at a page of addition/subtraction problems upside-down

I'm a 20+ year vet and this is not a recent thing.
Interesting.

Then again our store still pulls the "clopening" on TMs where they close one night and come in early the next day.

They usually do this on Saturday to Sunday and justified it by stating they are different weeks.

I had actually changed my availability to not start before 2:00 PM because they would change by start time constantly.
