Archived Gift Cards!?!

I don't normally do a lot of backup, so my question is probably totally dumb. If someone has a lot of gift cards and isn't giving you the death glare through the entire transaction why not explain about the new security and ask if they can help scratch off the strip on a card while you are scanning and entering the code on each previous card?

That’s totally fine to ask but the guest in that case does have the right to say no and make us do it

How much money is everyone giving away because of the new gift card policy?

I've lost track of how much I've either been told to give to a guest or have seen leaders give to the guests.

Every time a guest or cashier ruins the number on the back by scratching it off too hard we, "make it right for the guest."

How are you guys handling mishaps with the cards/numbers?

I’ve had people refuse to let us scratch it off and then get angry when they couldn’t use their gift cards. I don’t know what they think is gonna happen, even if I write down the number (what, right in front of you?) you use it... so there’s nothing on it after you leave. I literally can’t even brainstorm what they must be thinking

Who is scratching them so hard it's taking off the numbers underneath? We haven't had any issues with that.

Wait-except for one guy that brought his four cards in claiming there was $100 on each one. It was all gooey and I cleaned it off and got the numbers. $5 on those gift cards, buddy.

I love when people bring in gift cards they picked up off the ground in the parking lot (you can just tell) and ask how much is on it, and when I tell them $0 they say “well there should be $100.” Like, do you think I’m going to be like “wow, my bad! Let me put $100 on there for your inconvenience.” ??? I tell them “then call the number on the back and asked what happened to the money on here” and they say “you can’t just put it back?” Lmfao amateurs

just scan the card, and when the screen comes up asking for the code stare them straight in the eye and ask what they'd like you to do.

The problems with the new gift card process are:

1) after scratching off the strip code, the numbers are not always easy to read.....so sometimes you end up having to try a couple of times to get the number right.
2) even if guests scratch the strip, some of the numbers (the #s under the strip on the upper right part) are easy to scrape off and then aren't readable.
3) having a family with three children and all three of the kids have a GC or two. (only bad when there are guests waiting behind said family).
4) when a guest has multiple cards to use (happens often....when I bought a TV recently I had maybe 12 cards....thank goodness this was " pre" # scratching.)
5) when a guest gets a GC from a weekly promotion and then uses the card on the next transaction.
6) trying to figure out the best way to process the whole transaction....you know.....grab the hand scanner.....scan.....put the scanner someplace......grab the coin...scratch....gunk on bed scanner.......etc......repeat for each card.
7) guest using a GC (or giftcards) from their phone and not being permitted to take their phone from them ( or you ask to touch the phone) and have to give the phone back two or three times because they're using multiple giftcards.
8) I'm sure there are other issues, but can't think of them at this moment.....
thought of something.....
9) the guest who apologizes because they didn't know the "new" process and they have several GCs. (even if the guest has just one card, sometimes they apologize...and what really can we say?)

Oh......of course during the busiest time of the year is when they decide to do this.....why couldn't they have started even in early November to get guests in the "new" pattern so then things would go faster....

I don't know if it's only the specific gift cards that I ever see/use or what that you can, but why do people scratch them off instead of just peeling the strip right off the back of the card?
