Congratulations.

Can't help much with specific advice except to say be decent to your people, protect them from the smegheads above you and lead by example.

And bring cookies.

Well, some advice I gave the gstl tonight is to make sure the cart attendant isn't scratching up Lexus and beamers.. I had to save a couple today when I was coming in, cart att. Has about 30 baskets on the pusher, he stops to grab one.. All the baskets pop off.. And start heading for some nice cars.. Luckily I fuckin ran like lightning to stop that shit

Congratulations.

I will always do my best to lead by example. It helps that I have kids who have forced that responsibility on me. lol I treat people the way they treat me and am not afraid to admit when I'm wrong. Also.. I bake cheesecake!! 😀 I dunno how to protect anyone from the higher ups. Any advice on that would be good too.

Maybe he needs more training for the cart pusher? I mean.. it's a simple concept for me but who knows where that guy is at in his life.

Like I said it's general advice but here goes.
There are too many bosses who believe that shit has to flow down hill.
Don't be that person.
The fact is you are going to get a lot of shit, the ETLs are going to use you for an outhouse.
If they are having problems getting to green for anything having to do with the front end it's going to be your fault end of subject.
And they will want you to start cracking down on your people.
If you have bad managers, they might even want you to performance out people who aren't getting enough red cards and things like that.
They will pressure you and you will have to stand up to them.
Or be sneaky in ways to get around them.
I can't tell you specific ways, that tends to be part of a persons personality and depends on the situation.
Just fight for your people.

My former GSTL told me about how much he got, that he simply took because he didn't want it going to the rest of the team. When the numbers are good, your life will be good. When the numbers are bad, your life will not be so good. Only you get to decide how much you want to build up or tear down your team. As you know from being a GSA, your GSAs will be your right arm or your biggest headache. Get them on your side. Remember how tough it is to be a GSA, and keep an open door with them as best as you can.

I totally get what you are saying. I am familiar with the tiered shit drip program. lol I know that I will get cracked down on. I can handle that, but I will definitely stand up for my people. I'm the first person to say "WAIT. That's not right." and I'd rather take the heat for them when it's undeserved. If it ends up being a role that tries to change me into a person I don't want to be, I won't continue with it. I like our managers (in the store). It's the ones that only drop in for visits or make conference calls that I suspect are the ones to watch out for.

Remember that the SrTLs and ETLs and STL rotate in and out faster than our guests sometimes. So the ones you like today will probably not be there in another year and could be replaced by others you don't like as much.

Eww yuck. Didn't even think about that. *sigh* Oh well. I don't have to like them. I just have to find a way to work with them.

Ahh you just have to program the new ones. Stls are the toughest to mold

@canibedreamin All I'm going to say is strive to be RESPECTED and not LIKED. Keep an open ear to your TMs and be sure you maintain clear expectations for everyone. Maintain good rapport with your GSAs and avoid favoritism towards ANYONE on the team; perceived favoritism can destroy your relationship with your entire team. GSTL has biggest team in store and needs to be the most diplomatic of all TL positions.

Good luck!

Any advice would be appreciated!
don't know much about your front end duties, but I can tell you for sure that your higher ups will recognize and praise you for any extra stuff you get done. setting dept 152 salesplanners (check lane endcaps) pushing one spot. they especially like it if you can get all of the checklane candy pushed, as that's kind of an annoyance for logistics, and you'll be up at the front end all day anyway, ours just constantly repush it so we never have to backstock it.

A friend of mine who used to work for the company told me that they will expand/contract your responsibilities based upon how much your ETL/STL think you can handle. I've seen GSAs whose sole responsibility was to watch the checklanes and direct traffic - to SrGSTLs who have the photo lab, service desk, food ave, starbucks, cart attendant, electronics service, the one spot, checklane pogs, fitting room, equipment maintenance requests, TLOD and LOD duties to tend to all in a single shift. Just try not to get overwhelmed, don't let the stress get to you (there will be stress), and definitely, DEFINITELY always keep open lines of communication with everybody. The most successful leaders in any organization don't need to know everything that's going on, but they do need to know who to go to and when whenever and issue arises, and have an established rapport with those people.

and I guess just a general life tip: don't be afraid to apologize if you've done something wrong, or if someone seems peeved at you for reasons out of your control. you never know when you may need that person again 😉

best advice I can offer to you is to always put your people before yourself. your going to get a lot of shit from above and you need to take all of that and shield your team from it. make sure everyone on your team is on the same page and respects you. and most importantly lead by example, don't send any of your team into a situation you wouldn't go into yourself. congrats on the promotion and may the odds be ever in your favor.

I've been waiting for five years... please, dear God, throw me a bone here.

There is some truth in this.. I was in charge of all of those minus the TLOD/LOD duties, while the other GSA didn't do much. The Equipment Maintenance Requests alone were time consuming, especially in the Fall doing the Q4 Prep.

I am convinced all GSTLs either take acting classes, or give way less of a damn than anyone else in the store...

So your advice is to take acting class or not give a damn? lol
