I'm Lost! The Call In/Sick/Late/NCNS/Attendance Thread

Thanks all. You've helped me feel better. I honestly enjoy working at Target and I really need this job. I just hope that my GSTL's realized my sincerity. I'm just going to keep working hard and hope for the best.

Hey y'all. So my story is simple, I have flu like symptoms and ended up being sent home from school (18, still in high school) anyways, my question is: if I call in sick today, will it affect my chances of being kept on, since I'm still under the 90 days? My attendance has been flawless, with no days missed so far, and the latest I've ever been is 2 minutes. I'm hardlines, if that makes a difference at all.

If I do call out, who would I call? TSC?

Thanks in advance.

My store is not laid back at all about it. Regardless of how long you've been there or how hard you usually work, if you do a NCNS you're on corrective action.

Team member in the break room was sick with abdominal pain. They had the person sit in the break room. Is this standard procedure?

Eh, no.
If the TM had something contagious, that would've been the second best place to spread it (first being TMSC or handling equipment). They should've been sent home or to an ER.

I don't know about standard procedure, but I do know its the last place I'd want to be, if I were feeling ill. Our breakroom can get so loud sometimes, plus I'm sure nobody really wants someone sick hanging around their food. I think it would make more sense to have them chill out in an empty training room, or send them home.

Agree with redeye. That said, in our store the only places someone sick could theoretically sit down would be TSC/Breakroom or Starbucks, excluding like...1 chair in the fixture room and the husband chairs by the fitting room. So that was probably the line of thinking about where could somebody sit down offstage.

If I was sick, I'd definitely not go to the break room.

TMs smelling like cigs and gross food being cooked in the microwave (example: fish and/or Indian food), no thanks.

If I was about to throw up that's the last place I'd wanna be.

I had a migraine that was making me see streaks and making me nauseous.
There was no way I could have gone home in that condition.
The ETL LOG had me go in his office and told me to stay as long as I needed.

It really depends on what the exact symptoms are. If it is something on the lines of a stomach bug or something infectious. I would have them off-stage and away from a large gathering of TMs; usually somewhere isolated like the meeting room or fixture room or an GSTL/ETLs office.

From personal experience, I had a sudden onset of either kidney stones or a kidney infection while working guest service. I started out with a painful pinch on my sides. My GSTL/LOD first asked if I was able to finish my shift...I was a maybe. Within 30 minutes, I was sweating and doubled over in severe pain. PAIN LEVEL 7 bad. I clocked out, and was escorted to my car. And I drove myself to the ER 5 minutes down the road and called the store back to say I was being admitted.

Yep at my store everyone goes to the break room. It's procedure..... Ick I know:wacko: but that's how they roll....... I suppose they do not want people barfing it up at Starbucks and they always say put your head down see if you feel better if you aren't feeling any better you may go home. They really hate sending people home lol

When I went through the PFresh training for the backroom I thought I read that a backroom team member is not supposed to work in the coolers/freezers when sick. Did I misread that or am I correct? Thanks.

I'd say that they wouldn't want you handling fresh food when you are sick.
Going in the freezer is probably a matter of kindness, a decent TL or ETL isn't going to push you in there.

When I worked as a meat cutter just about everybody had a runny nose from working all day in the cooled cutting room and then going out on the floor.
It's pretty much standard for butchers.
Probably not something you wanted know, I'm sure.

Depends on how you define sick. If you're throwing up, or have some kind of bug that's highly contagious, I would say definitely not, and you probably shouldn't even be at work, let alone handling food. If it's just the sniffles or a cold, I would say its at the discretion of yourself and your TL.

Just don't wipe your nose on the coat sleeves :) I see so many backroom TMs do that and it makes me cringe... I have to wear those too!

This. I'm a PA and have had a cold from the seventh circle of hell the past few days. But took some meds, drank lots of fluids, and went to work. Now if I was ever puking/anything of that nature, I would not go anywhere near pfresh. Colds spread no matter what. But don't spread the flu.

Hello, if i have a doctors note and i have to call out twice in a row, but its excused on the note do i have anything to worry about? i have 6 call outs previously since i started in sept 2013 all due to the same reason. im cart attendant and have asthma and when i get sick it gets into my chest and my breathing is greatly hindered. i can also provide documentation about my asthma. if i have to call out these days it would make 8.

Sounds bad. See if they can get you a better position that doesn't affect your asthma as bad. Good luck!

For that's many call outs they might get pissed... I now spot doesn't like dr notes.

thats what i am worried about i dont know if i should go in even though my breathing is hindered and risk something happening or call out so im not a liability

Barcode is right, they really don't care that much for doctors notes.
They might not fire you directly for the call outs but they will find something to get rid of you for or they will cut your hours down to nothing.

What you need from your doctor is a note outlining your condition, with the limitations, so you can use the ADA and keep them from firing you.
That way you can also get them to transfer you to a job that doesn't aggravate your asthma.

Good luck.

so go in and be a liability or call out is my dilemma currently last sunday a LOD sent me home early due to me getting light headed and slipping on snow which slightly hurt my right knee usually im ok but i have been sick for a little over a week showed up to work 3 times while sick but its not getting any better and my breathing is bad right now

Don't go in if you're going to collapse.
What you need to do is cover yourself, which is why I said you needed to get an ADA note.

Then write up a request asking for accommodations (like being able to stay home when you are having an attack).
