I'm Lost! The Call In/Sick/Late/NCNS/Attendance Thread

Call in ASAP and try to see a doctor if you can. Calling in or being late is not good to do within your 90 days.. but you gotta do what you gotta do.. I really would recommend getting a note from a doctor! If you can do that i dont think this will be held against you at all.

Tell them you have severe diarrhea and for that reason you won't be able to be there in the morning. They won't ask anymore questions after that.

But seriously, either call about an hour before close tonight or about 30 mins after the Flow TL/early ETL gets there in the morning. Don't just NCNS.

I had a recent NCNS because I am sure that our 3 scheduling books were shuffled when I looked at them, I also stubbornly expected them to be in the right order. I hadn't called in or even been late for a year prior, and I guess everyone at work was legit worried about me (When you are missing your market opener on an order day it is kind of a big deal).

Little did they know I was up at 7am sipping coffee laying back in my lounge chair watching the news, thinking about how nice it was to have a day off. When I came in, the next day, I thought it was a joke being played on me that I missed work, until I saw. Either way all the ETLs pretty much just teased me about it, and I teased back.

When you work a job that you can be there anytime from 6am-11:00pm 7 days a week, there are GOING to be mistakes, which actually had me fuming that no one called me... If you work Monday through Friday 9am-5pm its a different story in my book. I wasn't coached because I think it was an obvious mistake, and if they were allowed to call me, I am sure they would have, as I am probably one of the most reliable TMs in the store.

My store called me the one time I was technically a NCNS (had to call out fri/sat for a family emergency, talked to the LOD and he didn't put in the e-mail that I'd be out saturday too). I was never coached or anything for it since I showed up at 7 AM the next day and explained (hadn't been by my cell phone when they'd called since I'd forgotten it at home)

Hello, I'm brand new to this forum and found it when trying to find a pdf of the most recent Team Member Handbook. I apologize for the potential wall of text that I'm about to post. Also I hope I'm posting in the correct place.

As a little bit of background, I (very) recently came off of a long leave of absence for educational purposes. I picked up a shift last week but this week was supposed to be my first week back. There's no issue there, I have no problem getting to work or doing the work or, you know, whatever.

The issue here is that I wrote my schedule down wrong, which is entirely my fault and I am completely willing to own up to not writing down the correct information. I wrote down that I was supposed to work today (Wednesday) instead of the correct time, which was yesterday (Tuesday).

I would have been happy to go to work, the only problem is, I didn't know I was supposed to (having written it down incorrectly) and NO ONE called me to ask where I was. I mean, it was simple human error and sometimes Team Members do just decide they aren't going to work that day and just not how up. However, I feel like it's a breach of trust between employee and employer if they don't even make the attempt to call to see what's going on. They certainly don't have any problems calling team members on their days off to see if they can come work a shift.

While it is a no-call, no-show situation, and while I am willing to take responsibility for copying the information down incorrectly, I feel it's unfair of them to mark it that way since they didn't call to confirm that it was, in fact a no-call, no-show. I don't want it going on my record. My question is, are they allowed to just mark it that way without calling the team member to make sure they're okay or to ask why they didn't show up to work? Surely there's something in the handbook about this and there's a way to dispute it.

Any help is appreciated.

Tl;dr: I don't think I deserve to have a NCNS on my record.

It is completely fair to receive a NCNS, because you did not show up for work, nor did you call. It is your responsibility to know what the schedule is, and to make adjustments to your availability as needed. It is not your TL's job to hold your hand and give you a slap on the wrist. It is not their job to call you; if you do not call, and do not show, you will get an NCNS, unless you can prove an emergency. There is a reason that you are not fired yet; some places would fire after the first one. My policy would be a three-strike policy. On the third NCNS, you are terminated; this indicates a pattern of behavior. I received a NCNS one time; I read the schedule incorrectly, thinking that I was off Monday and was to work Tuesday, and off Wednesday, etc (I actually was to work Monday, off Tuesday, etc). I went out-of-state to visit my grandparents for the day, and thought nothing of it. I went in Tuesday, thinking I was supposed to work that day, only to find that I was scheduled to work MONDAY, and not Tuesday. I received a NCNS, and even WORKED on Tuesday, my original day off (basically, I swapped Monday for Tuesday, but still received a NCNS as appropriate). I never made that mistake again (I was accused of a NCNS when my manager lied to me about the schedule, telling me that I was scheduled on a certain day, when I wasn't; I found out on my schedule that I was NOT scheduled, and did not show up).

They call if I don't show up. I was scheduled to work 9:45-3:15 yesterday. I looked at last weeks schedule instead, which was 12:45-6:15 and came in at 12:45, tried to punch in, told me it was rejected and to see LOD. Did so, found out I was supposed to have been in three hours ago, apologized, said I must have written my schedule down wrong. She just said she knew it wasn't a frequent occurrence so wasn't a big deal, that they'd called me to check why I wasn't in, and asked how late I could stay, I wound up working till 9:30, so instead of getting a NCNS, or working 12:45-3:15 and losing 3 hours of pay I actually worked an extra 3.75 hours than what I was scheduled.

Made a similar error once last year, we scheduled to work 10:00 to 4:00, I wrote down 4:00 to 10:00, showed up at 4:00 thinking I was on time, wound up working 4:00-10:00 that day. Seems at my store the STL's (it was a different STL yesterday than the occurrence last year) try and be as forgiving as possible so long as they believe it was a genuine error and not a common trend.

I work in CT and have accrued 9ish sick hours. I was wondering how I can use them. If I callout do I just say that I would like to use them for that shift? Or is it more than that?
Thanks

The mistake was acknowledged 6 months ago when I initially made this thread. Target got to me. Once I calmed down and the realized my mistake, I quit. I'm wasn't doing myself or my coworkers any good by being there.

We all make mistakes. Me having a NCNS is hardly the worst mistake I've ever made and that probably would apply to the rest of you as well. Live and learn. I've moved on and am much happier for it.

Interesting my location won't allow you to use like vacation you must call in then fill out request form such a hassle. I wonder if this is a regional policy ? I think we should be able to use the hours how we please.

When the spoke breaks, the wheel doesn't go round very well. So the etl did your job.. Who did his job? Every no call, every call out makes the wheel wobble.. Lots of missing spokes and the wheel won't turn at all.. Then what?

At my store, you have to fill out a paper form to use them. You can't use them like vacation hours, which I think it bullshit. I now have 80+ sick hours accrued over five years, and I haven't called out sick in over a year.

So, what I got from this thread is that the answer to; "How do you use sick hours?" is:

You don't.

That seems more or less accurate?

The form is just part of the policy. It should be a 2-part form and you keep the yellow copy. It's stupid that they didn't load this functionality into MyTime, but since not all states have to offer sick time I kinda understand why.

I don't know what the policy is for every store but. I used to put in for time off (this was MAX though), say it was for a doctor's appointment, and put in for sick time on paper the next day I worked. This way, you don't call out but you can use your sick time. Ask your HR if you can do this. I wasn't lying either. For kids, it takes several months to get an appointment with a specialist so I gave notice that I was going to be out and used sick time to pay for it.

im in the same position at my store. I feel like I am one of the few people who still cares. everyone else is still resigned to just letting everything go to crap... including most of the ETLs. There are like 2 ETLs who care, the STL who has to care. None of the TLs or SrTLs care. two of the other employees care, and they're just so frustrated that the leaders think they just have a bad attitude.

At my store, you can use them like vacation. I just found out I should be using them before vacation, because if/when I quit, apparently I'd only get a payout for the vacation hours (I think this differs by state)

So I called out for the second time and was coached by my TL. I didn't get written up or anything and they stressed this was just a "verbal warning" but honestly I feel so crummy about it. I absolutely hate being that one employee who has attendance issues and up until recently when I got sick twice in just a few weeks, I had sworn to myself that it wouldn't happen.

Should I feel this way or should I just get on with my life? How bad exactly are such 'coachings'?

Coachings aren't terrible but don't do that again. How sick were you? You can always show up and go home sick if you need to, so at least you're not calling out. Are you still under your 90 days?

This is horrible advice IMO. Our GSTL does this nonsense.

If you're sick, call in. Do not show up. If you call in hours in advance we can find someone to replace your shift. When you show up at the scheduled time and then get sent home we are fucked.
