Archived Being Called In

One time I had an ETL call me to come in and I didn't answer the phone. Then a hour later he calls again from his cell phone with a blocked number and I answered. Ended up going in to help out.

Personally I always had a ball when I do the rare afternoon drinking and they call me while I'm at the strip club. The operator is this fantastic middle aged gal that likes to just laugh it up with me, and I would start telling her how her favorite male dancer is in and that she should get out sick and come join me. Also I turn down the offer as I am inebriated.

Ahh, good times.

But seriously, just answer and say no if you're feeling guilty. Heck, sometimes they're just flexible about the shift adjustment too. They once called me to come in for a 3 to 1130 shift and I told them I would be happy to do a 3 to 8 and they took it. Beggars can't be choosers, after all.

I am not a salaried employee of Spot . Therefore, I am not on call 24/7...we work retail after all and we are not saving lives. If something comes up and the store needs extra help...they can call...if not busy and I am interested I will return the call and may just go in. Too many times I have asked to go in and was not given an answer or told no, we don't have the hours...only to be called the next day wanting me to go in. I pick up extra hours all the time this week I was scheduled for 3o will work 40. However, ask me while I am at work if you already know you need help the next day....and stop calling from your cell phone like you are going to trick me into answering

^This.
Most of the HRTMs/TLs will call from their cells, knowing that most folks won't answer if Target pops up on their phone ID.

It's odd. Your store must be rolling in excess payroll.

Or its like my store and you can count on at least 1 person a department to call out a day. The recent record for cashiers was 10 in one day.
OMG, you have 10 cashiers? Our list dwindles every day. At one time we had about 40. Now mostly Undependable ones. When we get the schedule for the day, we usually say - this one is going to be a callout, so is this one.. And it's usually true. As I said in another post, our moral is really down.

What bothers me about when they call people or ask people to stay later, the cashiers usually say no, but they will ask on other days if they can come in or punch in early? Um what I don't get is that they are never willing to help out when the front end needs them but when they what the extra money then they want to come in..
And another thing that irks me is, when people call out and then they come in shopping. I know you don't have to be sick to call out, but I find it to be rude to be shopping when you were scheduled to work. Maybe I just have different standards.

So far, my store has yet to do this to me. But it wouldn't work anyways because I don't pick up if I don't recognize the number (and if it's important, they can leave a voicemail).

That was when we had max, as soon as we switched to mytime it is a miracle to get enough people scheduled for the day. One day we only had 5 cashiers scheduled on a Saturday thanks to my time.

Only? 5 cashiers seems like more than enough. We usually have 2-3.

At once that is, or did you mean only 5 worked Saturday all day? I assumed you meant 5 lanes open.

It depends on the volume of your store.

So, true story, my store is rolling in payroll right now. It is open season on hours for anyone who wants to come in early, stay late, or add extra days on to their schedule. It's a beautiful thing.

Anyway, the cashiers who have come in early, stayed late, and come in on their days off are the ones who I have made it a priority to let them know about this hours bonanza. The others who clock in at 5 after, run out the door as soon as it is 5 minutes to the end of their shift, and never answer their phone or come in when we try calling are on my, "if I think of it, I'll mention it to you" list.

Only five worked the whole day. No idea what level our store is but we were supposed to make around 100,000 in sales with 1-2 cashiers on a lane at any given time.

Just putting my two cents in. I only answer if I would like more hours and if I don't, then I don't answer. The one thing I do is I wait for their voice mail, and they will almost always tell you where you're gonna be working. I have had in the past answered and said yes and then I find out when I get there that it's a Cashier shift, so that is why I don't answer unless I actually need hours regardless.

I've had one of the new GSTL's approach me to stay and again I don't like that because it puts you on the spot and they try to guilt trip you by saying "Oh we had 2 cashiers called off", like sorry that sucks, but I showed up and did my shift, so it's not my problem that the rest of the team can't show up.

I think it's fine to ask, but if I say no, don't continue to pressure, ask, just accept their decision and ask the next person because begging will not make me change my mind, ever.

On Labor Day, we only had four cashiers ALL DAY. And the closer failed to show up, so really we only had three. So it does happen!

If we had 4 cashiers on our Labor Day, we would have imploded, literally. We had all 14 registers open and were STILL backed up for a good 4 hours straight, it was horrible...
I walked in expecting a relatively easy 8 hour 1.5x pay shift, and the first words I heard from a coworker friend was "TURN AROUND, RUN AWAY, GO HOME. It's horrible in here" because he was in softlines and was being called up barely minutes after they'd let him go back, for 3 hours straight, and was falling way behind on tasks.

Is it normal for Labor Day to be that busy? What holidays/days are busier than others that I should know about?

Holidays are generally busy at least the day before, especially if it's gonna be a three day weekend and the weather is still pleasant. People grilling, drinking, etc. Day of will probably be busy during but by afternoon or evening should taper off considerably. Generally.

That is insane. My store is NEVER that busy, except on Black Friday. Last year on BF, we didn't even use all our lanes for some reason (16 open while we have 18). I have never ever seen anyone stuck back up cashing for more than 30-45 minutes at a time.

In my experience September - November can have some busy spurts that rival the holiday rush days.

I asked my STL how bad it was compared to Black Friday and he said "In the same ball park. Not quite as bad, but it was close for a bit"...
