Here’s my trick. When they ask if I can see if another store has it, when I find a match I say something along the lines of ‘so the system says the ____ Target should have 4 of them, would you like their phone number and the item number so you can be sure before possibly making the trip? I wouldn’t want you to drive over there to be disappointed if for some reason they don’t have it’. Then it’s framed as you’re doing them a favor providing the info to call. I also mention they can order it from their phone for order pickup (when applicable).
