Archived CVS Pharmacy @ Target

To add another layer on this I got my paperwork needed to do backup pharmacy LAST year and they NEVER scheduled me training until this year rolled around and they noticed I had to renew my license. Today I have to do pharmacy cashier training for 7 1/2 hours...sigh...not looking forward to it. Didnt want to even be backup certified because theres allready way to much shit to do in PFresh as the PA who is basically the leader for market since we dont have a CTL. My old STL just randomly came to me one day and said I was going to be trained to backkup pharmacy even though I think as a PA it is stupid since I allready have to cover other workcenters routinely like backroom, receiving and the C+S process, also backup up cashiering normally and helping the guests on my side of the store since they can never find anyone else.

Seems pointless that they all of a sudden decided that now I need to be trained. For what? So I can backup for like a month?

Have you seen the notices by the time clock about flu shots? I saw it today when I clocked in and it said something about how Target is already going to offer free flu shots in fucking August because they're worried about the CVS pharmacy. It said something about how team members need to take advantage of the free flu shots because once CVS officially takes over the pharmacy the flu shots may not be free for team members.

This is going to be a colossal failure. Epic fail. So the sale isn't even going to be finalized until the end of the year? I read an article about the sale and it said the sale don't be finalized til the end of the year. Does that mean we won't see CVS pharmacy store signs until 2016?

Your pharmacy may be "encouraging" (read: scare) team members into getting shots ASAP so that they can start adding the flu vaccinations toward their prospective goals. In addition, they could also simply be saying "yes, please take advantage of this while it still exists."

As for "the end of the year", that can only be speculated. The sale is being reviewed and will or won't be passed when the time comes. A second set of documents has been requested for review which delays the process for some time. The only thing this absolutely tells us is that we don't yet know when the conversion will happen, when offers to staff can be made, when rebranding will begin, etc… so the rumours of "this begins in september" or "this begins in 2016" can so far only be speculation. CVS has made it clear that once the sale is approved, the changes they need to make will begin as soon as possible. Until the sale is approved all we can do is wait. Or as they love to say "It will be business as usual."

Me too. I think this was a lazy way of making up the losses in Canada, but will really harm the company long term.

How will it harm the company? The pharmacy LOSES money. CVS takes over the pharmacy; then Spot stops losing money on the pharmacy. Yet Target gets the foot traffic generated by CVS and gets rent from CVS on top of that! It's really a sound business decision if Target is going to stay in business.

Target sold it for a fraction of what it is worth and the "rent" is basically negligible when you consider how much money is involved in the deal. Many guests who were loyal to Target pharmacy are not going to stay with CVS. Our store's pharmacy has been flooded with complaints because CVS has a shitty reputation.

How can you say "a fraction of what it is worth" when it is LOSING money?

I will agree with you on CVS' shitty reputation & losing guests. A number of them will have no choice either as CVS is not "in-network" for a number of plans.

Yes, it may have been $4 billion in sales, but it was still losing money. Most likely because we are paid better than other pharmacy employees at other stores, our prices were lower than other pharmacies, and we weren't regularly "short-staffed." Of course, under CVS, that is all going to end. It's already starting....hours have been cut across the board, even in areas where script counts are up 10% or more. Prevailing thought is that CVS has agreed to keep hours stable for a predetermined amount of time and Target is lowering them to levels that are "comparable" to current CVS stores with similar script counts.

I'm waiting to see what all is going to be discontinued before I pull our scripts.
Husband went halvsies on a Costco membership so we're gonna check out their pharmacy prices.

Was it losing money, or was it helping gain money by getting guests in the store at the same time as building guest loyalty?

Pribably convenient for some to get their meds and grocery shop on the same day.

The pharmacy was losing money. Difficult to say if the pharmacy drove foot traffic for the store. It would suggest that Corporate Target believes or knows that a pharmacy brings in guests since they still want a pharmacy in the store. They just want someone else to take risk. On paper a sound business decision. Now if the foot traffic drops because CVS is CVS, Target may see a drop in sales.

How much money were they wasting in order to take a loss on $4.1 billion in sales?

That equates to $2.3 million in sales per pharmacy. That just doesn't smell right to me. I firmly believe this has nothing to do with long-term profitability and everything to do with gaining capital in order to do a stock buyback program and stuff the pockets of the largest stockholders at the expense of the company.

Has anyone heard any more rumors about when this is all going to go down? I hate being stuck in this limbo.

Pharmacy does help drive sales, but it's questionable whether those guests come to Target specifically for their prescriptions or whether they come to shop and pick up prescriptions while they are there. We have also lost a good amount of business from people with Caremark insurance that have no choice but to use a CVS pharmacy. Those guests will now be able to return as many were NOT happy to leave.

Not really CVS related, but we are encouraging TMs to get their flu shot as early as possible, as once the merger takes place, its not likely that TMs will get them for free anymore.

What it really does is further erode Targets already damaged credibility. Why did Target fail in Canada while others have not, why can Target not run a pharmacy when all its competitors can? Anyone who does not see this as a bad sign is fooling themselves.
