This time of year I won't get talked to about OT. I could work 8 hours every day from now until Christmas and my STL would be completely okay with it.

Sadly my STL isn't the same. I can hit 40 every week, even if scheduled less, that is no issue, but she wants to personally okay any OT.

Ahhh one of those. My STL preapproved OT for all TLs a couple weeks ago so that was cool lol.

They are trusting you to make sure that you are working exactly 40 hours that week. If you clock in early, then you are responsible for cutting that time elsewhere.

Our GSTL will chill by the time clock until it's exactly time to clock in, and some TMs will take longer lunches. I prefer to cut it all at the end of the week and just go home half an hour early on Saturday (though that is frowned upon during Q4).

That makes zero sense. If they schedule me for 40 hours knowing the store sanctions the ability to clock in early, why am I responsible to cut hours elsewhere? I mean, I could if I wanted to, but why would I voluntarily? I don't have a problem with them sending me home early, but don't schedule me 40 in the first place and then complain about overtime, just schedule me 39! I don't mind. Shit, If they were serious about avoiding overtime, they wouldn't schedule anyone 40 hours.

How does it make zero sense that your store expects you to work the same number of hours you're scheduled for?

If you were to ask your ETL if it's ok to clock in 5 minutes early every day, they would probably say yes. The payroll will easily be offset by TMs who come in late or take longer lunches. But if you were to follow up that question by mentioning that you are scheduled 40 hours and still plan to work an extra 25 minutes that week, they would tell you hell no.

Stores get judged hard on how much OT they spend, and every minute adds up.

If you think you are unable to handle working exactly 40 hours, then you should let HR know so that they can give you less hours.

So last week I was scheduled 36 hours. My ETL gave me an extra 4 hour shift, which of course put me at 40. I always clock in early, and I did leave 15 minutes early one night, but it wasn't enough to offset going over 40. So by Friday, I was called and told to come in a half hour late...even though I was only 8 minutes into overtime.

So I came in about 15 minutes early/late, and double checked my schedule, and lo and behold, the ETL who told me to come in a half hour late hadn't changed me in the system. Since she was gone for the day, I made sure I had cut enough time to avoid the overtime monster, clocked in and went to work.

I'd never have a conversation like that with an ETL/LOD cuz *I'm allowed to clock in 5 min early*. If I'm scheduled for 30 hours, clock in early everyday and end up with 30.25 for the week, I'm working more hours than the store scheduled me for and they could reasonably expect this since they *allow us to clock in early*.

It would be a different story if I *leave past my scheduled time* (which I actually have been coached about a couple times), but if I'm scheduled to clock out at 8:30 and do so, there's no need for any conversation about when I clock in. If I clock out at say 8:40, by all means, have a chat with me.

None of this matters much anyway. I usually get scheduled ~32 hours. I'm actually capped at 28 hours by my request, it was approved years ago by HR, LOG-ETL or whoever, but they typically went over that by a couple hours the whole time (which I expected). A year ago, my LOG-ETL asked (officially) if they could ignore my cap cuz dayside BR had so few people, I told him 30 was fine, but they ignore that and go with ~32 (again, expected). I don't really mind. My whole thing was I only wanted to work 4 days a week and with a couple exceptions like last week, that's what I get. Now my days are just a little longer.

STL? He's a peon just like the rest of the store. That decision is made by the DTL or, more likely yet, someone above the DTL.

Those doing schedules shouldn't schedule up to 40 hrs. if the OT is such a big concern. In my old store, cashiers were expected to be reporting in to the GSA/GSTL at their official start time so that they can hop on a register. So, I always made it a habit to punch in 5 minutes early. Those setting the schedule know what they are doing! My state is a 6 hr state before hitting compliance. Cashiers are regularly scheduled for 5.75 hours just to avoid giving them a lunch or 2nd break. Target wants it both ways really. Schedule to the maximum allowed without having to "bother" with breaks or OT.
