Hello,

I have worked part time for Toys R Us for over 15 years and when it was announced they were closing the Target HR person came in and long story short, I was hired for SFS and went to orientation in early April and I am going to start on Saturday, May 19. Because I am so used to Toys and scared of change I have a few questions about target.

My shifts are all 8.5 hours long-is this typical? My first shift is 11:30-8 (which I don't love) and the other 3 that are scheduled are 8-4:30. I had put on my application that I didn't want more than 15 hours a week, but I don't want to complain about being 1 hour over. I only work weekends.

Are team members with less than 90 days worked allowed to ask for time off? (this may be a dumb question, but I don't know about Target policies)

Do team members get more than 1 day training?

Does more than 1 person do SFS?

Any info anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Typically in your in the interview we ask if there’s any upcoming vacation or days off you might need for that reason but as far as I know you just can’t change your availability the first 90 days.

Training isn’t very streamedline across the country so honestly not sure but technically your training schedule is a two week schedule written at orientation which is already written for regular TMs so I’d assume there is already people scheduled for SFS at your store and you’d be double. That being said if you do well I’m sure they’ll pull that TM to do something else to maximize efficiency.

And the number of people depends on your volume, every store earns a block of hours for every position based off sales and volume so it’ll depend on your store

Thank you for your reply, gsa4lyfe. They did not ask me if I had any days I needed off during my interview. I don't need to change my availability, I was just wondering if it is allowed for new team members to request time off.

Another question I just thought of, does the 90 days start on your first day of actual work or from your orientation day.

Training really depends on the store team and the individual trainer. I’ve seen some awesome trainers and some not so awesone trainers. My best advice, ask as many questions as you need to. No such thing as a dumb question. Learn now and prevent mistakes later.

This leads me to another question. So the management at the store I am going to be working at didn't put my start date in correctly and they put me on the schedule for the last week. I was called by several different managers call me and ask where I was. Is this lack of communication normal? I was wondering why the first manager didn’t take me off the schedule for the week. he called me on a Sunday then I was called again on Saturday by someone else. Also in the middle of the week the original HR person called to find out when I was starting. She did my orientation and May 19 was written all over my paperwork.
Also, it won’t count against me that I didn’t show up on those days, will it?

Keep on coming in. Miscommunication happens. Let spot know your strengths from tru. I know folks who left tru for spot, years ago. My spot store is right across from tru & is gone now.
Work the 90 days saying yes to all shifts, if you can.

At my store, most people LOVE working the SFS position.

You can ask for time off, but do it quickly for popular days like July 4th.
Some requests can be denied.... like for Black Friday.

We have 1-3 people on SFS on any given day. You should have someone with you for awhile.

Most of the time SFS goes smoothly, but sometimes you have random issues pop up.

An 8.5 hour shift in SFS is the norm at my store. We have an opener come in usually at 7 and do 7-3:30 and a second person do 9-5:30. After that it's backroom that watches flexibles (online orders).

SFS is the best place to work in the store aside from backroom. So congrats on getting in a good spot.

You're allowed to ask for time off regardless if you're under 90 days or not. At my store SFS and backroom go directly to our Logistics TL about it and run it by. Giving adequate heads up about it is key.

You'll likely "train" for more than one day. SFS takes a few things to learn and remember and you won't get it all with just one day. But after you get it, it's a cake walk. First day you'll likely be working with another SFS person or the logistics TL. After that you'll likely be on your own in a sense, but the other SFS person will be right there by you. Packing stations at my store are only a few feet apart. So you'll have someone there to ask questions to if need be

Keep in mind the 8.5 hours is the total time at Target for the day. Minus half hour meal puts you at 8 hour shift. Don't hit compliance, meaning don't take your meal after the 5th hour.

This is great information. Thank you. I did SFS at Toys for years and really liked doing it so I hope it’s similar at Target.
