Do we know why the scanner stops working sometimes? And what can you do to fix it?
I've come across a few. 1)Simply pressing the sleep "lock" button or 2)Pressing the home button and exiting the myWork app, then re-open it, or 3)popping the top off the sled, slightly pull the iPod off of the connector at the bottom, make sure you lock "sleep" the device before sliding the iPod back down on the connector and then unlock "wake up" the device and try scanning again. The last one has always worked for me because it's better than a reboot like I used to do. Why the scanner stops? I don't think anyone knows.

If I'm not with a guest, I just close the app and let the iPod sit in my cart for a while and I move on to something that I can do without scanning. Eventually it comes back up. Now, though, when I unlock the iPod, I count to ten before I even try to use the scanner. I used to swipe the app away and reboot but I'm just too sick of it. I'll swipe the app away from the multitasking menu once or twice before I just toss it back in the cart or holster.

I hate this thing. The AP-ETL makes me sign one out, but when I am on my own I try to sign out a PDA. There's no worse feeling than someone asking you to scan for something, and the scanner stops working. Or worse, someone asking you where something is and the WiFi stops working completely. I don't enjoy making guests wait for me to turn my device on and off, log in and out, and whatever else. Even though I am TPS, I am still wearing red and khaki, so guests are always coming over to ask me to help them out, which I don't mind. But this MyDevice makes assisting complicated, and I end up having to locate someone with a PDA on the floor 80% of the time.

Our ap always just asks over walkie where things are or he asks if a team member can come help if it's something he really can't help with. He never has a pda or iPod though.

I try to ask over the walkie as well, but I am lucky if I don't get the sound of silence for five minutes. I seem to find someone quicker on the floor than I can get them to answer a walkie.

I'm new, and in the the guard card process. I got my shoes today, but the rest has to be ordered. Which is funny because other stores at least provide a security T-shirt. Only the sr tps has the uniform at the moment.

Yeah, the possibility of you being new occurred to me after I posted before. For a while, one of our TPS TMs had an AP sweater.

Ahh, I see. Yea, some of the people in my store never respond so when I start wandering I find them b.s.-ing. So I get that. And I really didn't mean for that to come off judgy sounding.

Anyway. My annoyance with the scanners is growing. Why would they even deploy such half baked tech!? I've been typing in the long ass barcodes for guests lately. I get eager and don't want them to wait for forever so I always end up effing up the scanner by not waiting.

I just end up walking to a scanner in the time it takes for my own device to start working properly, or grabbing a TM's PDA if they are nearby. The scanner is probably the most irritating issue next to the WiFi. When guests ask me to scan things, it's usually because they just need a quick price check. Kind of sucks when I have to wander off to find a scanner anyway. The buttons are so small that trying to type up that barcode just leads to a ton of backspacing and re-entering.

Wish that i didn't have to cover up every other near-by barcode when scanning some products, really seems like it should just phrase all the barcodes it sees and shoot back the one closest to the center point that gives a result. Also considering how breakout boxes tend to share only a few styles of lettering that it should also be able to use ocr to just get a result of scanning the dcpi number. But i guess those are pipe dreams when they can't get the app to respond sometimes after the device goes to sleep.

The MC9200 PDAs do this, they will only scan the barcode directly in the middle of the crosshair. I remember hearing something about a keyboard combo to change that, but I would never want to. The issue you're describing is also a problem with the stupid handheld scanners we have at the registers, and it's especially annoying when you have some of those electronics items with 6 barcodes on one side, with the UPC being in the middle of all of them.

At least we don't have wireless scanners, which may be handy at guest service for some of those giant items we get, however when I was at best buy the wireless scanner just wouldn't work for the cashier trying to use it. Ended up typing in all the barcodes.

The more I have to use these, the more I get fed up with the DAMN SCANNER going to sleep for 5 seconds after waking the device up. What we really need is a scanner BUILT IN to a device so it never goes to sleep, those new android based PDAs they were testing fit the bill. If you just bolt on a scanner to a device meant to listen to music then you're going to have problems. I get why they did it this way, those PDAs can cost more than $1000 a piece (although I'm sure they get a bulk discount). I just think it isn't worth the lost productivity and image it sends to guests when they come across team members that have to either: type in a barcode or run to a price scanner (which they could have done themselves), or fiddle with their device for 10+ seconds to get it to work.

I think when a device says that a pair of shoes are x amount per pound is a pretty good sign that the creator of said device just doesn't give a crap.

So in huddle today, we were told that SUBT was coming to iPods next week. It'd be nice if we could pull batches as well.

I'm pretty sure we are replacing all of the old school PDAs with MyDevices. All of the backroom functions should arrive in the next week or so.
I could be wrong though. I'll miss RF Apps 🙁

Not sure how to do entertainment futures without NOP.

LPDAs are rumored to be on the way out during bounceback. PDAs will be around for a while, but stores may have their device count reduced. Theoretically, only TMs whose roles require a PDA will need them.
That being said, one of my fellow price change TMs was spotted with a PDA recently with a sketchy reason as to why she had it. We think she is secretly using it to scan softlines when we aren't looking. Ranks right up there with our PTL "checking" workload on a PDA and then remembering that doing so activates balloon audits. Nothing like activating 100s of price cut labels that are already up.

Per Ulguy-"To clarify, the January update will include SUBT, STO, and QMOS. Things like SDA and PCV are coming later. The ability to PULL batches is still not slated to be developed anytime soon. No word on if/when that is coming; but I'll keep you posted as I learn more."

... And on Monday I have to come in and update all of our mydevices.
