this photo is a small portion of what I do as a (new) Vml. Yesterday I spent 6 hours on the RTW VA because they hard trouble with the POGs and progress was slow... and then about 30 minutes touching up end caps and focals in hardlines. Every shift is different and not usually what I expected for the day. But I just go with the flow and work my hardest, and get the store looking as best as I can!
Thats really good. Im suprised you spent so much time in softlines, but im actually really happy that you did! I hope my VML follows in your footsteps. Our softlines needs help.

That's Target.
Once you start getting acquainted with the other depts, however, you'll get an idea of where you're needed & when.
Then you can really dazzle 'em.
Re: photo - good impact in a tight space.

Well redeye- the grass isnt greener elsewhere- macys literally overnite last year let go all of their visual managers in stores. 15 mill and under- they were turned inti visual leads if they re- applied for that job and would make 30% less and become hourly nit salry and loose your executive status- BELIEVE ME. Theres WORSE OUT THERE!!!

Weve went from 8 TLs down to 5 (9 to 6 if you include PMT). Weve lost an ETL position completely (not a demotion.. completely wiped away and combined with another position) and we'll be losing another ETL when CVS takes over pharmacy. we have had specialist positions stripped from tms, shift differential taken away and Hour restructuring. In the past.. 2 years? I can go on and on. Its safe to say target is just as bad, if not worse, than other places.

My macys store had one rtw merchant for 2 floors- 1 floor manager for all downstairs an1 and a half for upstairs- and 1 sales associate handling intimate/ sleep/ kids- 1 for mens and home- demoted dock manager to a partine pisition- when a truck would hit- full size- it was him and 2 part timers to unliad it- no human resource manager- that pisition was a travelling one as well as ops- we were lucky to see them once a month- by the way rumor has it the company will merge those 2 jobs to one next year and let one of them go---- grass----greener

Specialists were eliminated in 2010.
During that time TLs & ETLs have been trimmed every year, depts combined & payroll cut.
The VMTL was the first position ADDED in five years.
As Clearance said above, we're about to lose the pharmacy to CVS.
Pharmacists & techs alike will no longer be employed by Target.
Those who are choosing to stay will have to wait to see what CVS is offering.
The grass certainly isn't greener at Target or any where else.
Off-topic: Didn't Macys take over Robinsons-May stores years earlier after their (RM) in-house merger?

@VML22 any chance you took photos of rtw? I really wanna see what our vmls can do to the racks, not just the mannequins.

I didn't because I jumped into such a mess. So far I have been following the adjacency fairly closely. But adjusting the fixtures as needed to be more visually appealing and accessible to guests. Certain things just don't make sense.

I'll take some pictures when I can get a chance... And when it's looking picture worthy. Haha

This is what has been expected of our instocks team since day 1. .. every trend run and every endcap every day. Not all are equipped. Now none of us have to be.

I'd be curious to see more pix of how other VMTLs are shaping up their stores but there's the danger of being 'outed'.

So our vml was finally introduced at today's huddle. My Stl said the Vml will focus on areas before transitions to make them look pretty. Our entire ETL leadership ignores softlines, doesn't get it, and doesn't want to learn it. And all but 1 ETL is female. This has gone on for YEARS. We are a low volume supert with only 1 hltl so the vml will be in Hardlines every day.

So far all she's done is condense Halloween and move it to mini, stock Christmas for 2 days, train with price change for a week (because they had call ins), cashier, and work pulls. We don't have a home remodel and will never get it because our store hasn't made sales for 5 years+.

She's a recent college grad with NO merchandising experience AT ALL and has only worked for target 3 months in the backroom before being promoted.

She. Won't. Last.

Can anyone explain to me what this person does? The one at my store seems to have no idea what to do
Monday they walk with store leaders around the stores and address anything that needs done to visual areas of the store(trend runs, vocals, softlines). They also print the PTM report and speak to the Sales floor TLs about ptm areas and any ideas they have. Any adjacencies that are being set or focal/trend runs should be addressed too.
Then, they get to work. Every visual area of the store is touched up, flexed, zoned, PTMed. They make sure the signing on those areas are correct and not missing as well. Basically whatever needs done to make it look great. Mannequins are dressed to the adjacency or something similar if we don't have enough of that clothing. Any rack in softlines that looks like crap and they have a better idea of how to merchandise it they can fix it. For instance if they go on the computer and realize Xhilaration sales are down in RTW, they go over there and fix it. Make sure it's on the right rack, merchandise outfits together, etc. They clean and dust the fixtures as they go through. Its a lot of small tasks that were already being done by other teams (except now it can be done routinely and kept up with).

Not to be unduly critical, but from a sr tl at another store, the pay is waaay out of line.

This sr tl is lod many shifts and a keyholder (obviously.) He's been with the company for 5 years, starting as a sales floor tm. Worked his way up while going to college.

He told me he almost walked out when he found out the newly hired vmtl was making more than him. Great strategy target.

My opinion, an unnecessary position. Ours had zero to do with setting up seasonal. How much more of a VISUAL representation is there in the store??!!

But I agree that it'll be a huge learning curve to find out you've just been hired to be cashier most days.

At least most will be the highest paid hourly person in the store.
