I make $9.50 an hour and next year California's minimum wage is going to $10 an hour just in time for my yearly review so I'm looking forward to seeing if they are going to give me an actual raise or just say the minimum wage increase is good enough.

I live in a low wage state, so when Target raised starting wage to $9/hr most people got over a dollar raise to get to $9. On top of that most people got an additional $.10-.20. So you "may' get the bump to $10, and a few cents more. However, all of our GSAs make less than $10 which stinks for them.

SOP at Target is to raise you to the minimum, plus any extra you get for your pay grade, and then add just that year's raise. You lose any pay raises from previous years.

Since I make 50 cents above minimum wage I'd assume I'd get $10.50/h next year but I'm 99% sure I won't.
Instead they will give me $10 + the yearly review raise which will be maybe 10 cents.

Which sounds about right because people who work there for a while originally made less than the new hires when the minimum wage went up to $9 last year.

Yep! I made less than $10 before raises happened this year and the new Deli base pay (at my store) is now $10. I got bumped up to $10 and then had this year's raise added to the $10. I lost 5+ years worth of raises.

I wish it was increased to $10, an extra dollar for every hour I park. You would think that they would at least give us parking decals. On an 8 hour shift, I have to pay $9 on parking.
I would think you could claim that as a work related expense on your taxes. 32 hours X 52 weeks =$1662. A good chunk of change.

I did some research and unfortunately it looks like it can't be deducted. Apparently parking fees at the place I work are nondeductable commuting expenses.

New York just passed a $15 minimum wage for fast food workers. I hope retail comes next.

How can the "minimum wage" not apply to everyone???

The restarant workers were actually making less than minimum wage because of a scam pulled by lawmakers back in the 80s.
So they fixed that first.

There's really no reason minimum wage needs to be $15. A lot of minimum wage jobs are for high school kids and college students, and aren't expected to make a living off those jobs.

That money has to come from somewhere, a lot of places will downsize and try to squeeze out more efficiency. Work conditions will take a hit, and unemployment may increase.

If they're paying $15 a lot more people will want to work those jobs and a lot of people will have a hard time getting a job. Especially younger people.

Heck I only make $19-20, I would feel pretty gipped if someone flipping burgers was making close to what I make when I'm using my college degree and any idiot can flip burgers.

Restaraunt workers make a lot of money off tips actually. The nicer the restaurant, the more they make. My buddy is a server and can make anywhere from 100-200 on a weekend shift. And he isn't working at a super fancy restaurant.

If they make $15/hr then we can essentially stop tipping. However a lot of restaurants would go under.

There are a number of restaurants that have gone to the European method of folding the cost of labor into the food and telling the guests not to tip.
Some still do out of habit or because they are really happy with the service but the staff make more in the long run, don't have to resort to begging from people (because face it, that's what tipping comes down to) and don't have to worry about a bad night meaning they can't pay the heating bill.

Either system works really. The current system is a little bit better because you can take your cash tips home tax free (I used to work in Pizza Delivery, no one reported their tips lol)

Most restaurant tips are credit card though.

Considering the fact that tipping became the standard purely as a way for restaurants to cut their overhead during the Despression, it's long past time for it to die. Servers shouldn't have to rely on the general population to pay their wages.

Complains about illegal immigrants using tax dollars in another thread, advocates committing tax evasion.

Yeah except I actually pay taxes unlike a lot of Illegal Immigrants who get paid under the table.

If they really want to help people in this country, they don't need to raise the minimum wage, they need to reduce income tax and spend less money on things we don't need (ACA).
